Better Times (LOH Contest number 228)

"It’s a Wonderful Life" is set in the 1940s when men were men, women were ladies and they dressed accordingly. You might consider clothes a trivial thing but I believe that what we wear affects how we feel and thus how we act. I detest the current fashion of wearing sweatpants and runners outside of a gym environment. It makes people look ugly and slovenly. Ugliness demoralises while beauty inspires.

The film takes place in a town where people look out for their neighbours, a deeply connected community where people are put before profit and greed. It reflects a desired humanity not found in the increasingly self-absorbed society of today.

It tells the story of George, who, facing financial ruin, is on the point of suicide when he’s visited by an angel. The angel shows George what life would have been like had he never existed, reminding us of the impact our actions have on others in ways we don’t realise.

For most of his life, George has put his family and community before his life and dreams. When the time comes to reciprocate, family and community come through for George, saving him from ruin and completing the picture of what I believe our world should be. A benevolent, empathetic utopia -vs-the disconnected dystopia we see around us.

Nice choice for a world to live in! Where caring is a currency.

Caring is a currency...wish I'd thought of that!
I love that film. It's one of the few I can watch over and over. That sort of small, high trust society embodies many of the values I hold dear. At the same time I'm a reclusive misanthrope so I find myself conflicted:)

I have to admit that I was surprised. You play up your misanthopy.

I do play it up a bit 'tis true. But at the sound of a kind word or sight of a good deed my misanthropy melts like snow on a sunny day, and I am transformed into a fluffy ball of cuddliness.

Great movie choice - I love it as well - watched it umpteen times. I try to be hopeful that like fashion some things will come back in style. Fingers crossed that it happens sooner than later. I want to be around it witness it. 😀

Apologies for late reply. Nearly missed your comment.
You'd never know. Decency might come back into fashion sooner than we think. The pendulum has swung so far to one side it's got to change direction soon. There's a cycle to everything.

Totally agree.

Back in the day, people's lives were traditional; and more devoted to culture but now the modern world is completely opposite. What a great movie to understand and recognize the value of life...

Thanks for sharing...

Agreed. I think we could do with a bit more tradition and culture to get us back on the straight and narrow.

It was better when times were worse, no baby gangs...no men who can have periods, women with penis... If you were out of money grocery would just give you for free or ask money an other time, everyone knew each other and was willing to help... Now it's everyone for himself

That's it, in a nutshell.

I had to go back to London for a funeral recently - after being away for a few years it's a pertinent reminder of how far we have fallen. Monitored, tracked, and charged everywhere I went - it felt like an open-air techno prison - replete with an oppressive powder keg atmosphere. Not pretending that things have ever been perfect - but it was certainly a shock to the system!

I feel the same when I return to Dublin. Would that I were born a few decades earlier so I could have enjoyed civilization for a little longer.
