Shabby Chic (Contest number 226)

How do I dress stylishly and ethically without breaking my budget? By wearing other people’s clothes, of course!

I have two wardrobes, one for slobbing around the homestead planting plants and mucking out chickens and the other for the rare times I board a bus to go see my friends in the city.

When I’m not setting foot outside the gate, my outfits consist almost entirely of hand-me-downs. I’ll wear anybody’s clothes, dead or alive.

Jacket came with the house, jumper my brother's, shoes liberated from my brother-in-law's shoe stash and he hasn't noticed yet, joggers left behind by visiting friend

When I moved to this country house five years ago, I commandeered the piles of clothes, overcoats, shoes, and jumpers left behind by the previous owner. That’s not to mention the jumpers and cardigans I inherit from my brother, who grows increasingly plump each day and periodically sheds the clothing he’s expanded out of. He also favours woollen items that he invariably shrinks in the wash, and these, too, find their way to me.

Coat and shoes courtesy of deceased neighbour, dress I've owned for three decades

Of course, I wouldn't be seen in public in my homestead chic. Oh no! I'm an ex-city slicker, and even at my age, I have to look the part. When I’m off to town, you’ll find me in my best bib and tucker, dresses that are just as classy now as they were when I bought them second-hand in the 1980s, coupled with a stylish coat and winklepickers given to me by my neighbour before she sadly departed this realm.

Thus, I never have to buy clothes and yet I’m suitably kitted out for every occasion. Though how ethical it is to appropriate your brother- in- law's shoes is open to debate.

It is great that you do what makes you happy and comfortable. We are living our own lives not anyone else's.

I have never read one of your post where I didn't smile or have good laugh. Thank you.

Thank you for such a lovely comment. Mostly I find life so absurd I have to laugh. And you know what they say...laugh and the world laughs with you... or at you!

!Lol, Winklepickers. Now that's a witchy style of shoes! I wish I had a pair. ❤️🖤

What’s the difference between ignorance and apathy?
I don’t know and I don’t care.

I'll leave them to you when I die!:)

Your wardrobe sounds much the same as mine, mostly thrifted, donated or inherited. My 'slobbing around clothes' are called scrub clothes, be it scrubbing dishes, floors, vehicles, wool or a hundred other things that are in need of a good scrubbing. I have a few pair of jeans and one little black dress I call my Funeral Dress. Shoes are mostly boots for me but I'd just as soon go barefoot. I don't think there's anything wrong with appropriating your brother-in-law's shoes, as if he hasn't noticed them missing, he apparently isn't overly fond of them lol. You've a perfect wardrobe!

I don't think he suspects me of nicking them since he's a size 7 and I'm a 6 but I just use the thick sock trick. Anyway, he has well over 50 pairs of shoes and nobody is entitled to that many.

lol I don't think I've owned 50 pairs in my whole life. Was I deprived? Probably. I like the thick sock trick, it comes in handy.

I like your way to do things on clothing, I'm of the idea "who cares of the clothes"

As long as you're wearing some clothes the job's a good 'un!:)

Exactly! Couldn't say it any better 🤣

Thrift stores, garage sales, and the like are my main source of clothing. If I buy something new nowadays, it's a deliberate choice because I need something specific which should last a long time.

When I started buying in secondhand shops in the late 70s, they were full of classy, well-made clothes from the 50s and 60s. A few of the things I bought then I still wear. A lot of the stuff you get now is twenty-first-century tat. I know from your blog that you do quite a bit of research before buying. I do the same when considering electrical goods and books, but never clothing.

The first paragraph got me laughing 😂
I love your post, it is so lively

I guess we are all guilty of wearing other people's clothes in one way or the other.
I love wearing my brother's clothes even though he doesn't like it when I wear his clothes, I just can't help it, his clothes always look better on me

As long as he doesn't start wearing yours!:)

You've got the right idea, @deirdyweirdy ! Dressing stylishly and ethically while sticking to a budget is totally achievable. Thrifting and wearing hand-me-downs are fantastic ways to keep your wardrobe sustainable and unique.
