On Family, A Dawg & A Screensaver

in Ladies of Hive3 years ago

I feel like I have to share two things for Ladies of Hive this week, because both came to mind when I read the new question of the week:

What's on your screensaver on your phone?

Coincidence would have it that yesterday I changed my phone screen saver! So it seems only fitting to explain both.

Firstly, the one I DID have was a photograph of waves overlaid with the words:

Why Now?
What For?
What are You Yearning for?

This was an experiment that I was undertaking after reading Sarah Wilson's book 'This One Wild and Precious Life'.. In it, she talked about how much time we spend on our phones and it's mostly trying to fill a need within us for connection, but results in endless scrolling and time wasting, and is quite the antithesis of living. The three questions on the phone are designed to check your reasons for being on the phone. I moved all my apps four screens across, so it was much harder to just pick up the phone and find them.

Did it work? LOL. Of course it didn't. I just found clever ways to get around it, and my brain was so used to seeing those three questions it no longer even REGISTERS what they say. The best way to not use your phone? Put it on silent and either leave it at home or put it up the other end of the house with the door shut.

So yesterday, I decided to change my screensaver to this picture of my son, his fiance, and their dawg, Edie.

These kids have known each other since 14, and have been best friends and then got together at 18 when they moved out of home with friends. She's a keeper - I adore the girl. The two of them are tight - they really look after each other, and are totally together. I could have done a lot worse for a daughter in law, right? Every mother's nightmare, I think, to have your son stolen by some horrible person. But she was like a daughter to me well before they got together.

They got engaged in the last Melbourne lockdown, just before she went into hospital for an endo operation which was quite serious. The first thing she said when she woke up was 'can I have kids?' to which the answer was 'of course!'. So I guess in the next few years this screensaver might be replaced by my grandkids, which is kinda freaky, right? I'm too young to be a grandmother, aren't I? I mean, I'm only 39 :P

But now to Edie. Edie we got in the lockdown of 2020, the mid year one. She was meant to be our dog, but we chickened out at the last minute. Wanderlust, independence and dogs don't always mix.

image.png

So the 'kids' got her, as the week before their rabbit died. Cue weeks of sleepless nights and months of puppy training, which resulted in them looking like death warmed up and as stressed as mums with nightmare babies. To their credit, they persevered - determined puppy training and puppy school meant that a year on, this shnauzer-kelpie cross (I know, right?) is quite a good doggie, and we love her so much we even occasionally allow her to sleep on our bed.

image.png

My prospective daughter in law sends photos from Melbourne of Edie nearly every day, and it's even better if I get a picture of my son and the dog as well. A boy and his dog is just the best, isn't it?

Every time I look at my phone, I just think of happiness. Three beings I absolutely adore.

Here's something else though, while I'm on the subject of Edie. A schnauzer cross kelpie is quite the unusual mix - we don't see them a lot. Many people stop and ask what kind of dog she is. Some people guess schnauzer, because of the beard and eyebrows, but the kelpie suprises them. We just dont see dogs like her. Anyway, Melbourne cup weekend, we were down the beach with the dog and a woman walks past with her doppelganger. She stopped to chat as she was also amazed - she'd never seen another dog like hers, and yes, it was the exact cross. We thought it might have been from the same litter, and same parents, but it absolutely was not - the dog came from a different part of the country. Stranger, neither of us had been to that beach before and she was visiting from out of state. How odd it was that we both were at that beach, at that time! My question is - can you tell which one is Edie?

Oh I just love them! Edie is the cutest. I didn't realize the surgery was so successful, too! So glad to read that grandkids (of the two-legged kind) may actually still be on the table.

Probably won't get to a post myself, but it's Romanesco. A close-up of those gorgeous, planty fractals. ;)

Yes, it was waaaay better than they thought it would be - after all that worry, things turned out fine!! I thought you might be busy, but I'd thought of you because of the Schnauzer.

Are you kidding me? YOu have broccoli as your screensaver? I thought it'd be your niece! You are funny!

I appreciate the tag to see more pics of your loves! I only now got around to my second waterfall post, with two more vacation adventures to go. And a recipe post that really needs to go up soon. Otherwise, this would have been a fun topic to touch on!

Yep, broccoli. I did used to have the little one on there, but for changed it out a year or so ago. She's not far away as all I have to do is open up my photos and there she is. ;)

I enjoyed reading your entry especially seeing how beautiful your daughter in law and your son are. I pray she has Children too so you can have your grandkids as your screensaver.

Me too! Thanks so much for your blessing!!

Your prospective daughter in law must love your very much, (and the dog) to send photos from Melbourne of Edie every day, hehehe 😄
Thanks for sharing, @riverflows!
Good luck with the contest.

"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship." Ralph Waldo Emerson

You know what, I think she does!!! Which is lovely, right? I'm blessed.

That is a big blessing!
Can you imagine if that is not the case.

You received 5 LADY(LOH) tokens for entering the Ladies of Hive contest.

Please note that since our LOH token is still so new, that it will be worth more if we HOLD them for a bit before trying to sell them. Some have been trying to sell them immediately after receiving them, but holding them for a bit will help them to increase in value! We are working behind-the-scenes to try to keep the price stable, but the "sell orders" are hampering the stabilization of the price of this new token. Please hold on to your tokens. Thank you! 🙂

¡Considere esperar! ¡Gracias! 🤗

Yes these confounded gadgets that were touted to be vaulted tools of Productivity and Convenience, simplifying or lives at a touch of an app. But not advertised is the mind numbing addiction of demanding every moment of your attention away from even life itself. The heart of it Pavalovian in nature, training and rewarding appropriate behavior by it's designers every time there is a beep, buzz or custom tone of your choosing. By habit I check my phone as I retire instead of muting the BLOODY PHONE!
On a lighter note, the smartphone does replace all those precious photos of family, friends, and my kids growing up and does a nice job holding a thousand pictures (That I should back up) than my old wallet. My problem is always narrowing it down to a few favorites. You don't seem to have that problem?

Thanks @riverflows in joining this week's Pajama Party 🤗

Oh yes they have TEAMS on this stuff ensuring we are addicted. I have to say I do ALWAYS have the phone on mute, much to the consternation of people trying to call me.

Eek, it's totally hard choosing the best photos! Don't you love a collage for enabling one to include heaps in one frame?

Almost a grandmother and not even 40 yet... yes yes too young hehe
But what a love story
To have known each other since 14, together since 18 and you already loving her way before that.

That's a fun pic to have on your phone - I'm sure it makes you smile everytime you turn on your phone :D

Well, I don't have a cell phone, so desktop it is. I make my own home pages and change them for seasons and holidays. This is the current one for the browser:

I may change the browser in the next week or so.

My husband's fishing buddy has 6 kelpies. They are wonderful dogs, but VERY high energy.

Awwn 🥰 ! They look cute. I love the photograph of your son and his dog. Your son is cute and congratulations in advance to your being a grandmom. Get ready for kids asking different questions of almost all the things that happened decades ago. Lol. Great post.

The most precious thing a human can have is a dog. I have always said that. Good post buddy keep loving that beautiful furry little guy. 🥰🐶

Dawgs Dawgs Dawgs...........we're a-comin' round that mountain we are!!!!

I reckon Edie's the one in the upper part of the pic, next to one of her Hyumis (your son I'm guessing :)....amirite?

Your son makes music?

What beautiful pictures! I read you saying: "my kid" and I am filled with tenderness, because it is true that for us parents, our children will always be children. I have an eleven year old son and I still call him "my little baby". But I have a niece who is only 12 years old. She is married, she is 29 years old, she is expecting a baby and lives in Barcelona and for me, she is and will continue to be my little girl, my "chupetica"(my liltte lollipop).

Really? Would love a photo!
