A Walk Down the Old Houses of Town

Pendgast-Harling-Terhune-Villabos

Those are the past and present owners of this home. It was built in 1878. How many years is that... 143 years? Wow! Can you imagine this house standing that long, and everything is pretty much the same!

The house is Italianate Victorian. It belonged to an early Christian minister and his name was Reverend J.N. Pendegast. He lived here for 18 years.

The columns in front of the house are Doric motif. From1896 to 1944, the home belonged to the Micajah Ogelsby Harling family.

M.O. Harling at that time became bank President and a Bank of America advisory board member.

Then in 1953 Howard and Sylvia Terhune bought the home. Mr. Terhune was a very skilled designer, so he and his wife devoted the first fifteen years restoring the house. Mr. Terhune is also among the first in the preservation movement of this town.

Jose and Simona Villalobos are the current owners of the home.

Happy Autumn!!! A perfect day for a #WednesdayWalk! My grandmother is in a small village on Long Island where most of it was made up of newly arrived immigrants that had settled and built structures that reminded them of the styles they would find at home.

The Italianate Victorian was a very popular style during that time, and I fell in love with the beauty of the lines and its opulence and grandeur. They are glorious! I was so, so close to buying one, but, to put it back into its true state would have been more than was affordable. That was over 20 years ago and when I went back to visit, the house had been bought by people that had the means to make it amazing, so it had found its true destiny.

Thank you for showing off a beautiful part of your California!! It was wonderful walking with you today!

I don't even know how it lasted that long. I bet you the homeowners spend so much money in fixing it, restoring it... the pipes alone! The woodwork... And repainting it...

The main streets of our town are full of these houses. And it is due to the preservation movement started by this guy, who owned the house.. Mr. Terhune

Great to find places where history in old homes is upheld, preserve something for future generation. All too quick old building are destroyed and replaced with inferior design (sorry not always attracted to modern)...
