Several years ago, I lived and worked in a relatively large city. It was surrounded by a sprawling metropolitan area and was quite a melting-pot of people — including tourists as well as permanent residents — which I thought was delightful. My company employed people of every imaginable race and culture, which made for a wonderful educational experience in learning about foods and customs from different parts of the world.
My supervisor was American-born, but his ancestors came from Poland. There was a delightful young woman who was also American-born but her mother was from Bogata, Colombia, while her father came from Santiago, Chile. Another young woman's parents came from Cuba and she was born in Miami, Florida. There were others with ancestry from Korea, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, India, Ireland, and other places. One of our interns was from Germany, and came to work for us when she graduated from a university in Kentucky. When I was promoted to a management position, my immediate superior was a woman whose ancestors came from Russia. It was an enriching experience working there!
And then there were a couple of young ladies from Jamaica. They were both so pretty, always upbeat in attitude, and lots of fun to talk to. It was fun listening them talking to each other, excitedly, in Jamaican Patois, although I certainly didn't understand much of what they said. During lunch one day, we were talking about what we were going to prepare for dinner that evening. One of them said, "Patties!" and the other responded positively that it was an excellent choice. I was a bit mystified because "patty" could mean so many things. So, I timidly asked, "What's a patty?" Both of the young women giggled surprise at my question, but answered that a "patty" is meat wrapped in a flaky crust. Further investigation revealed it to be a sort of savory turnover, similar to empanadas in Hispanic cuisine.[1] I decided if I ever had a chance to try them, I would, as I like trying new things!
Several years went by and I never saw a Jamaican "patty" on any restaurant menu and I'd basically forgotten about them. Then, one day while aimlessly wandering down the frozen food aisle at my grocery store, I saw them!

These are made by Carribean Food Delights®, a US-based company that was founded by a businessman born in Jamaica. Since he hails from Jamaica, I feel sure that his product likely upholds the integrity of a traditional patty, although not as good as a homemade version would probably taste. They had "mild" and "spicy" as choices, so, of course, I opted for "spicy!" 🔥
Each patty is individually wrapped in a little packet. As they're already fully cooked, a simple thaw-and-heat operation is all that's needed to prepare them. The instructions on the package recommends 16 minutes in a 400°F/200°C oven or two minutes in a 1000-watt microwave. I usually go for three minutes in the microwave, just to be sure.

A couple of these are usually kept in my freezer at all times for when I don't feel like cooking anything more involved, and I find them quite tasty! I had one a while ago for dinner, accompanied by some leftover Creamed Spinach (one of my favorite side-dishes) which I prepared last night. Perhaps I will remember to take pics of the Creamed Spinach process next time I cook it and include the recipe here. It is easy to make, so healthy, and sooooo good! 😋
The photo below is a single patty, cut in half to show the beefy filling. That is a lunch-sized plate (8"/20cm) from my set of dishes. I seldom use the large "dinner" plates as they're just too big for the amount of food I eat, and the lunch-sized plates keep me from loading-up and overeating. 😉

According to Wikipedia, seasoned beef is the most common filling for Jamaican patties, but sometimes chicken is used as well as other meats, and there are plenty of potential fillings that would appeal to vegetarians, too. The shell of the patty is very light and flakey, making them somewhat delicate.
Every time I eat a patty, I think of those two former coworkers of mine who taught me about the patties, and I also think of our dear @millycf1976 as well, who has probably eaten many of these in her lifetime. 🙂
Have your ever tried a Jamaican Patty?
Do you make them, yourself, or other empanadas or turnovers?

Hey there!
The image belongs to millycf1976.
Hey @thekittygirl
I smiled when I saw this!
I haven't had a Jamaican Patty in ages, but in my high school days, patties were my lunchtime snack.
Traditionally, it's beef patties, then there was beef with cheese, called Cheese Patties. However, now you have chicken, curry, shrimp, and vegetable (callaloo, similar to spinach) patties that are common.
Would you believe there was an outlet in a mall in the Philippines that sold a variety of Jamaican patties? Hubby and I always made a stop there on our business trips to Cebu City.
The Jamaican patties are a remnant of the British Cornish pasties. However, I find Greggs Steak Bake more similar to Jamaican patties because of its thinner crust.
I hope one day you'll get to eat an authentic Jamaican 'Juici' Beef Patty. There's a rival, Tastee Patties, a company that the older generation prefers for its buttery, flaky crust. I love them both, but I'm more accustomed to the Juicy Beef brand, which is nationwide. Tastee is mainly in the capital of Kingston:)))
Have a lovely weekend!
I was not familiar with these and came across some in a grocery store a few years back. I like to try new things. The ones I found were edible, but not too impressive, but I liked the idea and made a mental note to try to find somewhere that made them for real, so I could see how they should be.
Anything in a pastry should be great!
Mmmm - delicious. It is great to hear that you enjoy this Jamaican treat. I am sure that I had their patties in NY and there are mouthwatering for sure. Last year, I was in England and brought some home with me. I have tried making them - they were delicious but not exactly as they should me. Empanadas are nice but different from patties due to the spices.
Seems as athough you worked in a great multicultural environment - how fun.
It sure looks like Nigeria meatpies without the veges and Irish Potatoes.. I'd sure would make this when I get the time 😌
These would make for a nice lunch. Lunch is something that ole' Joe is responsible for making on his own. I am always looking for something quick, but different. These might just do the trick. However, I am not sure I could find any around here.
I'd call the patty 3D version of our Naija meat pie 😅. It sure looks yummy and will make for a great breakfast.

No I haven't tasted it, but it looks like meatpie
I'm from the Philippines and we have empanadas here, introduced by the Spaniards. And yes, I've had patties too. I love both, and often buy them for my afternoon snacks.
Very similar to a Venezuelan hallaca, with the difference that it only has meat. It looks exquisite.
I always wanted to try a hallaca, too! I see so many posts about them on Hive every December! 😁
Is that Naija version of meatpie

@thekittygirl, I sent you anI'm glad you finally discovered them, they taste great don't they? Empanadas are awesome, and I l like the Jamaican version because they have a nice spicy kick to them. I miss living the Caribbean, it was such a fun place !
Your friend's parents came from two great cities, I lived in Santiago, Chile for quite some time, and Bogata is a really pretty place as well! A couple cities I wouldn't mind seeing again in the not too distant future!
Wow, you lived in the Caribbean & Santiago, and have been to Bogata as well...? So wonderful that you experienced so much of the world! 😃
All beautiful parts of the world! I love South America, it's a great place. Venezuela was wonderful back in the nineties, but not safe for me as an American to travel there anymore sadly. If you have a chance the Caribbean is wonderful place, so much to see and do!
it does look like empanadas. spain probably left that food in the philippines, too
Beef patties, wow..I love how it's being packaged...it looks yummy and no doubt about it tasting so delicious
It exactly look like the naija meat pie.

Those are good patties. But the two guys that I worked with on construction jobs told me that you need to put cheese on them. They told me that west Jamaica puts cheese on them.

I'm curious to give it a try.
In the blessed name of Saint Bob Marley I will seek this culturally significant dish as soon as I figure out the Venezuelan/South American Halacas and how to import fresh banana leaves to wrap them proper.
For kitchen research purposes of course.
