Last year, as I became more active on Hive, writing more content - I noticed myself turning off distraction more often, and seeking relative quiet during my writing time. This lead me to consider how much YouTube content I was consuming, whether actively or passively. In December I resolved to spend less than two hours a week watching YouTube. I've generally been able to stay under this budget, except in weeks where I have created content that required parsing through a Youtube video.
Curiously the less YouTube I've watched, the less I've wanted to watch. This suggests to me that I had unconsciously formed a habit. Unfortunately I didn't keep track of my consumption earlier. I've know consciously broken a low value habit, an replaced it with increased writing.
How many hours a week do you spend watching YouTube or similar services?
Is it benefitting you?
What would you do if you reclaimed that time or focus?
Rise and fall of music formats:
Well done there, I moved to vapes years ago will add that it was months before the flem stuff dropped off, slowly getting clearer as time went on.
Zero now of course.
Also guilty of watching rumble, odysee, brand new tube (now renamed), pluto dot tv, brighteon (you can't even say that on fb) and a few others.
i'm guilty :-)
I think I watch less than an hour a week on YT.
Maybe 10 minutes a week! There is plenty to keep me busy on Hive!
Sending you Ecency votes!
My youtube veries a lot. But one could say I watch way too much. I have to pay attention to my moods to make sure it's not effecting it. I noticed if I let the algorithm pic what I watch I get more emotional. Consistently have to influence the algorithm so I don't get too much of the same topic.
The alogrithm's purpose is to keep you glued to the screen. Whether or not that's good for you isn't a consideration.

True but they suck at it! I get bored quite often.
If you look at my profile pic, you can imagine I do spend some time on YouTube!
How much time? Probably an hour or two on most days. Mostly watching shorter educational videos on things like AI, religion, mythology, science. But I do also keep up with channels I have subbed to over the years - usually musicians and vloggers.
It benefits me. I can find timely info on current topics and deep dives on other things that interest me. I include one or more videos in my daily actifit report.
One can get sucked into watching too many videos, especially the Shorts. So I try to stay mindful of that.
Currently I'm happy with the time I spend on YouTube.
It is easy to destroy time with shorts.

I probably watch too much YT, but I expect this may change over then next few months.
This is good to know. This is a time for habit changes and creating new mental/physical patterns. Better of course!
