Better spent

in Reflections3 months ago

I managed to get a short break from work today and spent it at a cafe enjoying a cup of tea and a cupcake; I only had an hour but it was enough, relaxing, and somewhat entertaining as well.

I spent some of the hour watching two girls in their early twenties a few tables down who spent their entire time together taking photos of themselves, selfies, checking them, taking more, rearranging the table so it looked perfect and taking still more selfies. It seemed like so much work but they were dedicated to it and didn't seem to mind the fact they looked quite ridiculous.

My guy took this image

After all the selfie-taking came the uploading stage, to what I assume was Facebook or some other similar thing, and then a half hour of constantly checking their phones for likes or responding to comments that came in. It all seemed so exhausting to me although some of the faces they were pulling for their photos made me laugh; it seems the duck-face pout is still very much in vogue. It left me wondering what value they find in it.

I don't take selfies much, maybe one or two now and then to send to my guy. I'm not on social media so don't feel any need to do it and feel there's better things to do with my time. Maybe I'm in the minority there though as it seems so many people are happy to spend their time doing things that offer a questionable return, if any at all.

I ended up getting bored watching them and opened my book and by the time I looked up again they were gone, I hope to do something more productive than filling their phone up with pictures of themselves because I think time can be better spent.

Young people today waste too much time on such banalities, I suppose because they do not yet suffer the common pressures of life.

Even the way they relate to each other has changed, they tend to live and breathe on Facebook and Instagram rather than in real life, something that has nothing to do with our generation.

Thank you for always bringing us sweet and beautiful music in your posts.

And the cover photo looks great for your post, I loved it 🙃.

Do you think it's because they have nothing better to do or maybe that they don't know what things in life will bring them a feelingnov value so they default to selfies on social media? It's sad I think, that young people have that lack within and seek to fill the void with superficial things.

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. Have a lovely end of the week and a good weekend as well.

You said it well, these are existential voids because they believe that physical appearance is everything.
It will simply take them a little longer to understand about feelings.

A great weekend to you too, dear Becca.

🌹

Certainly there are many better things to do... many young people are only interested in the likes they get on the networks as a sign of approval... very superficial... I hope one day they will understand the value of time.

Hugs Becca.💗

It's a need for validation they might not get elsewhere I suppose, it's quite sad though. I hope they find something else in their lives to make them feel valued; I think they should be looking within themselves.

Becca 🌷

Yes, that's very sad and only by looking inside you find the source of it all, that's Becca.💗

I completely agree.

What if they had post on HIVE lol. !PIZZA

Taking a hundred selfies and posting them on Hive, and taking a hundred selfies and posting them on any other social media is the same thing; this post isn't about social media per se, it's about how young women feel the need to validate themselves with their looks, seek that validation externally from strangers rather then seeking it from within themselves, and seek relevance through creating "lives", representing their lives, in particular ways that are probably not at all accurate just like the people I mention in this post. It's sad that a woman feels the need to seek such validation from external sources; the vehicle to do so is social media and it perpetuates the problem.

Becca 🌷

Yes actually you are correct. Seeking external validation has always been there. Social media has actually amplified it. I've used social media for a short duration and even after getting likes and comments it makes you feel like shit because social media can never validate us truly as we know what we are.
When we receive validation it contradicts with the fake image we have put forward.
