As far as work ethic goes, I'd say I'm right up there meaning I work hard and consistently towards what I need to achieve; slacking off isn't my way and it just doesn't feel right and, besides that, everything great that I've achieved has come through the application of effort (and other things of course) so it seems legit...but having said all that I've been known to burn the candle at each end and push myself too hard for too long and while sustainable for a time it eventually catches up. These days I try to find a little more balance where possible so take a day off now and then which often involves doing nothing except enjoyable things that make me happy...that's how it should be right?
I had yesterday off work and managed to not look at my work phones or computers for the whole day and well into the evening. (Ok, I looked once or twice but didn't action anything.) It was a nice day off...but I was still on.
The problem with working so much professionally is that all the other things that need doing in one's personal life still occur but tend to mount up so while being off work I was still very much on, meaning still working, albeit on things in my personal life that required my attention.
This is what the day looked like:
- 05:45: Wake up, went for a run came home and showered.
- 07:30: Headed to the the blood collection clinic to have some taken for testing (I had to fast all night prior so had to do it early.
- 08:30: Home for breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon and coffee.
- 09:15: In the car to the roller door place to grab two additional remote controls.
- 09:45: Bunnings, a huge hardware store chain, for cutting discs, a padlock and liquid nails.
- 09:55: Ignored a work call.
- 10:30: A podiatrist appointment.
- 10:10: Ignored a work call.
- 11:30: Home to code in the roller door remotes I'd bought and to have lunch. I finished off the last forty five minutes of a movie I'd started two weeks earlier over lunch + ignored a work call.
- 13:00: Drove to one of my other houses to load up a trailer with stuff to take to the dump.
- 14:15: Dropped the trailer back and assessed an electrical job at that same house and spoke to an electrician.
- 15:00: Appointment with a chap in respect of my kitchen renovations.
- 15:30: Fucken housework.
- 15:50: Ignored a work call.
- 16:15: Watering in the garden, (snuck a coffee in too).
- 18:00: Started dinner...Burritos y'all!
- 18:20: Ignored a work call.
- 19:00: Some stuff I'm not telling you about.
- 20:45: Grabbed a coffee and sat on the lounge to watch a few Special Ops: Lioness episodes.
- 23:45: Shower and bed...and some more stuff I'm not telling you about.
I'll admit that there wasn't a huge amount of physical work in the day but it was a pretty full day and a long way from sitting around on the couch doing nothing and by the end of the day it was nice to shut my eyes and find some sleep which I guess would have been 01:00...with another 05:45 wake up call not far off.
My life always seems to be full of stuff and it's easy to feel overloaded but I have the ability to be off when I'm off and on when I'm on, I guess that means I know how to be present and get the most of the time I spend whether it's working professionally, having days off where I don't do much or those that are busy...being present in each moment gets the best out of life.
What do your days look like when you take one off work? Do you always have loads of stuff to do or are you able to do very little, relaxation and enjoyment type things? Feel free to let me know in the comments if you'd like.

Burritos 😋....perfection. Sounds like you would get more rest if you go to work lol.
The Physics of Productivity: Newton's Laws of Getting Stuff Done
Things in motion tend to stay in motion so....no grass growing under your feet 😂
Yeah, I guess I generally keep moving - a high operational tempo it's called - a byproduct of having a lot going on. I certainly relax as well though, I'm good at doing that too, and it's nice to do knowing stuff is done.
Is that a day off? I can't imagine a busy one 😅. I know from your posts that you work harder than you let on, so a day off is more than well-deserved, mate
For me, a day off is about doing things I enjoy, clearing my mind, recharging a bit of energy. It definitely includes a relaxing breakfast, several cups of coffee, and of course, a good book some fun plans with my girl 😉. But above all, very, very little work or study!
Yeah, that was a day off. 😐 I have another coming up soon and the plan is to ave a more relaxing one, I might even go to the movies to see the new Gladiator movie. Maybe.
I like your day off plan, I do the same sometimes but life has to get done too so when there's things to do I do it. I'm looking forward to a more relaxing one next time though.
It definitely sounds like a full day. I think days like that can be enjoyable as long as you are able to set your own schedule. When you have to follow someone else's schedule it can become quite stressful. I never enjoy the feeling of that I have to rush around to get stuff done. It sounds like this was paced very well for you!
It wasn't rushed and I had a sense of achievement at the end so that felt pretty good.
That's definitely an amazing feeling!
The “free” days are usually dedicated, in part, to preparing for the week, cleaning, organizing the house and shopping for the week. I also take the opportunity to read and study, but I watch less and less movies.
As my days off, i.e. weekends, are not so free, I try from time to time to treat myself to a real day off or a getaway outside Madrid.
Greetings.
I think it's good to find balance and, of course, certain things need to be done. I'm not the type to neglect my responsibilities and I think you'd be the same.
Good morning Galen, you think well. Hope you enjoy a great Thursday (it's almost Friday ☺️).
It's Thursday morning and breakfast time so my day only started an hour or so ago. No run this morning so I slept in until 06:30...lazy me!
I hope your run into the weekend is a good one.
Thanks 👋
Hmmmm hahaha! Hope it was fun!
My days off usually depends if I have something planned beforehand to complete (e.g. errands to run), or whether it's more free and easy. Either way, I like to enjoy good coffee at cafes when time permits.
I don't like to waste time so often plan doing nothing as well as plan what has to be done. It doesn't mean I'm not spontaneous, just that when there's things to do I find it easier to have a plan.
When I take a day off (only one day), I don't usually switch off, unless I'm busy and can't answer the phone. I usually ignore emails until the evening.
I mostly use that free day to finish some private obligations, I rarely lie down and rest all day.
But when I go on a summer vacation or some city tour abroad, my work phone goes into Airplane mode. That is the advantage of carrying two phones (a private one in addition to an official one, because you can easily divide the time... Hm, this is worth writing a post about 🙂).
Oh yeah, it's super important to have the phone off when on vacation otherwise it's not really a vacation. We need to recharge and we can't do that if we're always working right?
I haven't quite had a job in which I've worked for more than 9 months straight. It's been school after school so I do not know what it feels like to "take one off work." Taking one off school would've been a thing, but schooling doesn't give you much freedom, except on holidays after exams, which are filled with basically the same things - TV, hosting/visiting friends, more TV, until school resumes.
I've been quite the academic, and I can't wait to live life on my own terms.
Yours was a nice read BTW, chuckled everything I read, "Ignored a work call." It sounded like a guilty pleasure, or mischief.
Maybe you'll get a job that permits you to take a day off someday and you'll be able to see what it's like and if you spend your time watching TV it seems like you don't have much of the kind of responsibilities I have. That may change though.
Even if I have a day off there are always things to do, I usually set myself some timetables, otherwise I end up doing nothing and I like to do things I enjoy like reading, going for a walk, chatting with my family, enjoying a park, watching a series or a movie... and I like to be able to take advantage of that time and then feel satisfied with the things I did.
It sounds like you've got the right idea.
It is the most productive.
Your day even when day off is kinda organized with those time. I feel like you're day is still Productive with everything you did, from simple home chores to ignoring calls, everything has set time 🤔. When I have a day off, I don't really do much but just spend watching or reading a manhwa. I don't have any set scheduled, I just let the time flow and enjoy the free time. 🤭
Sometimes I have to structure my days off to get the most out of them; wasting time isn't my way.
There is no way one could say he is off when life is still on. You could be off work in one aspects at the same time fully working on other aspects
