A unpaid bill from decades back charging Dad
We had a land line phone long back, as far as I remember, probably couple of decades back. Dad was doing alright then, and he was the one who was taking care of all the financials and paying the bills. I never thought, he owed any bill or amount to anyone, because Dad was very honest and righteous person. In fact many people took money from Dad, some even telling lies. I know few incidences when those people came back regretting their act, but there would definitely be many more incidences.
I don't know how my mail id was with them, but in August 2023 I got a legal notice, for immediate action and due compliance:
Unfortunately Dad does not remember anything since last few years and even there are no records at home that we can validate. I am not sure, when they reminded him again and again - not at least when he was having his memory right because otherwise he would have swiftly paid without even telling us.
That my client reminded you time and again and also brought the above said matter to your notice and asked you to clear the outstanding payment but so far you have not made the payment to my client.
And they have been sending a reminder mail once in a while, the last one 3 days back. I am not sure, what this Lok Adalat does, but it makes me wonder, why the govt not pay fine, when they don't deliver the service which they are supposed to. At that time, the service quality was very poor and there was even no SLA for the repair. Unless you had some ground staff, whom you knew and could tip off, they never worried to provide the service for which we were paying. As a common man, there is no respite for us, to not pay taxes, don't we deserve the service in return ? Why can't they set up a simple process which will allow us to report incidences and then the system take legal proceedings and/or action against them, when they fail to deliver service, without we being much involved. And the most irritating part of this whole conversations it that, you can't reply them.

The entire system needs to change to bring transparency, but at times I feel, they (all political parties) knowingly don't do it because at the end it will impact most of them, having all the unreported wealth. Everything is possible in the name of democracy.
Has anyone filed any legal proceedings against a govt office ? Would like to know about their experience. Also any idea about how far this Lok Adalat things can go ?

The telecommunications and Electricity department have a habit of annoying & harassing the urban dwellers only. The rural people in Odisha never pay such bills and they remain scot free. I dont have any experience with Lok Adalat or consumer court, but I am sure you will get some relief by petitioning Lok Adalats. Consult a local lawyer Sir.

Well this is for my native, so that was a rural place back then. Let them go how far they can, finally they will have to come physically to take the money, and I am sure, it will take another few years.

I think you don't need to pay. We also receive electricity bills worth 1 lakh in the name of my grand father who is no more in this world a decade ago, but they keep on sending 1986 bills. Just avoid it and lodge a complaint in Lok Adalat about that.
That gives a respite.

Check the headers. Make sure it is legit because normally if something isn’t sent within 7 years the debt must be wiped.
Of course, without knowing all the full details, from here in New Zealand it feels like a scam.
It's sad and unfortunate that this government company is trying to threaten people this way. Unfortunately they lack transparency and this system must be changed.
This is very sad, and I don't get why they will say you shouldn't reply to the mail. At least they should be a provision for you to ask questions and get clarification
Government needs money! They know how to manhandle the citizenry in order to satisfy their greed

Something bad is happening to you, the best thing is to give them money and get out of trouble. I don't think this Lok Adalat thing can go far.
My father is BSNL employee but this type of thing never happen It’s frustrating and unfair. Lok Adalat settles disputes quickly—mostly for small amounts. You could challenge it legally if needed.
Don't mind those heartless, wicked people.

Friend, but I think it is very unfair to charge for a service that has not been used for years. Well, we have never had that type of problem with the government because here, when selling, they usually do what they call: "Clean the Slate and Start Over."
That is the whole reality, my friend. Politicians would never benefit from everything being transparent because they would be the most harmed, since some would not know how they managed to have a certain amount of money as assets, I am sure of that.
I have never gone against a govt office, it would most likely lead to a loss and a lot of money to pay without enough evidence
Most of the time, I have come to discover that why those governments take some certain steps at times is because of their own selfish motive
The truth is that for the common citizen there is no respite, my friend, and the government entities that are supposed to help us, as in this case, are only harming us. This problem has never happened to me, my friend, and I hope that yours can be resolved as soon as possible, without paying anything.

That's how the system works, it's all one way, where only the common man is penalized for anything and everything.
Other thing is that just be sure if this is genuine because lot of scams also these days.
