Overall, it was a pretty good weekend. And today, breakfast was made for me. Not only that, before my wife even got up, Smallsteps had cleaned up her things from the loungeroom, and neatened her whole room. Normally on the weekend, she would eat what I have prepped for her the night before, and watch some TV and play for an hour instead. My wife hadn't even asked her to do this - it was on her own volition.
I was "woken up" for breakfast (I feigned sleeping), but first had about ten different cards from school and that Smallsteps had made for me at home. There was even one in German. And, during breakfast I got the final card, with a picture of Smallsteps and I on it, and the present - a hoodie with the same image printed on the chest.
I will wear it with pride.

And, because I didn't find any yesterday and it was father's day today, I was able to convince the girls to come again with me to a different shopping area to find shoes. And, in a stroke of luck, I found two pairs of shoes that while neither are quite what I was after, will do for now. Both were on sale, which is a bonus. Smallsteps hates shopping (I am sure this will change in time), but she trooped through and barely complained. However, even though she hates it and complains normally, we always have fun on these kinds of outings.
We stayed out for a bit of father's day lunch, but because I found what I was after pretty fast, we were able to wander for a bit, but got home earlier than expected. So, we watched Finding Nemo, for the first time - something I have wanted to watch with her for so many years already. As we don't watch that many movies together, there is a massive backlog of potential things on the list. At her age, a lot of her friends are quoting from movies and shows, singing theme songs and asking for merchandise that Smallsteps knows nothing about.
She isn't missing out.
Some of the parents I know seem to spend most of the time with their kids, trying to avoid them as much as possible. There can be the sense that they are there to provide and see them through to adulthood, but not necessarily give much more than that. I really enjoy spending time with Smallsteps, because we get to talk about all kinds of rubbish, have fun, and even tease each other. It is not that we are "friends" wither, because I am definitely the bad cop as the parent, but we have a pretty good dynamic in our relationship most of the time. One day she might read this, and if it is as a teenager, that same dynamic is likely going to cause some major conflicts between us.
That is part of life.
So yeah - I think it was a successful father's day weekend. The Finnish president announced that next year there would be awards for father's day also - I wonder what are the requirements to get one. I am guessing, I won't qualify.
Maybe if Smallsteps puts in a good word for me.

That hoodie is pretty cool XD
I need to find something that will do something similar as middle child wants a leavers jacket
That spending time with kids thing is one of the reasons we made the decision to take the massive income cut (at least initially, it was me staying home with the kids and while sibling dearest and I did start up a reasonably successful business it took a while to get going) and one of the reasons we decided to homeschool.
Maybe as you said some parents think that all they have to do is get them to adulthood, but I feel like some people just have them either to tick a box or because they can't grok the idea of contraception.
Yay for finding shoes!
:D :D
I am not sure what this is.
The leaver's jacket? It's a special variation of the normal school jumper/jacket/shirt that the "leavers"/graduates (so either year 6 in primary school or year 12 in high school) can get. I'm trying to find somewhere that will allow a one-off printing as everywhere I've found so far are geared towards schools or corporate so their minimum order is usually 20 and all the places where I can get one-offs have got pretty bland designs (for understandable reasons).
It's nice to hear you had a wonderful Father's Day! Brilliant gift of the drawing and the hoodie with the same design. I'm guessing your wife had a little bit to do with that! Your girls treat you well. Gongratulations on finding your shoes....Bonus!! lol
Of course - but they have been keeping it a secret all this time. It took ages to deliver, and many design attempts apparently.
I was pretty lucky today :)
Wow! She is going to be a big girl. You should feel happy that she has gained such habits ;)
Hopefully it becomes a habit, and not just a father's day one off!! :D
Starting anyday with filling the belly is a win in my book.
:) :)
I normally skip breakfast, but I don' mind eating if someone else does the prep!
Same. I cook breakfast like 3 days a year. I’d rather go out for breakfast if I’m going to stuff my face early on.
Fathers Day is in June here in the US, so at first I thought this was some kind of birthday post instead of a holiday. Where did the custom hoodie come from? online, or is there a cottage industry of Finnish artisans? I ask because I've ordered a few items from eastern Europe.
It came from Germany apparently, but I am not sure if it was printed there either. Who knows these days - plus, because my wife ordered it, I have very little insight.
My colleague (US) was surprised last week too when we were talking about the weekend. A lot of the days are pretty random all over the world. I guess it is about whatever makes the most money. However, while Mother's Day is filled with sales in Finland, Father's Day is very low key.
You must be proud.
I am indeed. Second-hand pride :)
Sounds like it was definitely a really great day! We had a bit of a gloomy day here, but it was pretty productive in our house. I even got to see my parents for a little bit today.
Oh that is nice! Do you see them often?
Yeah, I try to see them at least once a week. Sometimes it is every other week though. Life gets busy you know.
Oh, I didn't know you spend Father's day in a different month there. It's usually June for us. I think that hoodie is awesome. I can imagine smallsteps' face lighting up everytime you wear it, and how fun it is to show how once she's grown up.
It is in June in the US too, but September in Australia.
She is going to for sure. She loves seeing her work used.
Love the hoodie, what a great idea!
It really is a good gift. I will wear it with love :)
❤️
We spend a lot of time with our eleven year old daughter. Everywhere we go we take her, my wife calls us a tricycle 😀
That is nice, isn't it? Perhaps it depends on the child - we might be lucky with ours, but the rest of them may be terrors. :)
It sounds like a lovely day. Happy Father's Day to you!
Thanks!
