Pepe Le Pew Encounter

in WE ARE MOVING2 years ago

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I might be showing my age with this reference, but we saw a bit of Pepe Le Pew!

Pepe Le Pew Encounter

When the little man and I were out on our normal walks, we happened to be going by one of the spots that we go every single day except that we had such a chance and random encounter that took us completely by surprise! We ran into a skunk! Lol.

I haven't ran into a skunk in decades, if at all. I always see them dead on the side of the road, smell them first of course before I see them, and this one was really cool.

We were out on the normal walking route we take in the afternoon when out of the corner of my eye we saw this thing move. We see a lot of squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks and the occasional other critter but we've never seen a skunk before! I was pretty stoked to see it as I always like to see these things in real life and show the little man what this stuff looks like.

He was also excited but also a little scared. The first thing he asked me is "will he spray us?!" and I told him no, it won't do that. The skunks only spray if they get scared and as long as we don't run up onto him or threaten him in any way it will be totally fine.

I don't know a lot about skunks but I thought they were more of a nocturnal animal, being that they are covered in black for mostly with a bit of a white patch. That to me means that they are more nocturnal but after a quick internet search I have confirmed that they are indeed mostly nocturnal but do come out during the day and it isn't that abnormal for them to do so.

Good to know that we were dealing with some normal behavior! I didn't think it was a case of rabies as the animal didn't exert any odd behaviors that one with rabies would, but the thought did cross my mind!

While we were walking, it was funny, we ran into some neighbors as well. There are lots of older women that go out walking and roaming the neighborhood in search of some exercise. They saw us and were walking towards us to say hello as they normally do however they noticed that we were looking at something and kept an eye on it. Eventually they spotted what we were following and immediately turned around! We saw them later on the walk and had a bit of a laugh but they said they saw the skunk and were not at all interested in testing the thing so they turned and immediately left.

Thankfully this chance encounter ended well for both us as well as the skunk! We walked the little critter through the property and caught up to him as it went into one of the neighboring yards. He was headed onto the street and there is a dangerous corner where people come flying around it. I knew that was a bad idea for the little fella so we went to intercept, hoping that we could steer it away and not get some negative affects of it! The skunk was confused and not really annoyed but tried going in another direction which we then didn't want either so we intercepted again. Thankfully the second interception proved successful and it went along it's merry way and into the yard under the fence, steering clear of the oncoming cars.

It was fun to have this experience for a few reasons, and one of them being so that the little man can have a situation where he's helping an animal get out of a potentially bad or dangerous situation with humans and not get hurt or killed because of confusion, fear or a misunderstanding. I think that's important nowadays because there are too many times where people react irrationally to something and end up hurting or killing an animal that just wants to be left alone. If you help guide it to safety without being an asshole and hurting it, the animal will think nothing more of you once you depart the space that it's occupying!

I'm happy that we encountered the little critter and guided him to safety! The little man enjoyed it as well so it was a win all around!

That is an interesting encounter for you and the little man. Are they usually roam around your neighborhood, or usually stay in the woods?

I've never seen one in all the years I've lived here, and I've driven at all hours of the day and night. I'm not specifically sure where they live but there are lots of places around they could live, I guess they prefer hideouts like wood piles and shrubs. This one snuck into a backyard and likely was it's home somewhere back there, though I don't know where as I'm not familiar with the yard!

I don’t know why I thought Badger in my head when I saw it. Maybe it’s the black and white fur coat colors. I’ve never seen a Skunk in real real life before. That was pretty awesome for you guys. That must be all the little man has been talking about for the rest of today.

He was definitely excited to see it that’s for sure! They are cool but even living in an area they inhabit it’s the first time I’ve seen them myself lol
