When I was a kid we used to go fishing all the time. We lived in a really small town inside the fjords of Western Norway and fishing spots were just as abundant as the fish in the sea. We could walk just a few hundred meters and throw out our line in the fjord or we could drive for a bit and do some sea coast fishing. I remember the best spots always being under the bridges that tied all the islands together.
Once we moved to the city fishing kinda stopped. There's a lot of good fishing spots in Bergen but the accessibility just isn't the same.
This week @emuse had the brilliant idea of going fishing. We went and got some gear at the local sports outlet and started looking for decent fishing spots. I immediately sighted a spot that looked promising on the map that's not far from us at all so that's where we went. We got a lot of decent tips about fishing spots through a Facebook group that we will save for later.
It was pissing down rain today so we geared up accordingly and packed a thermos of coffee and something to bite on. We had no idea how long we would be staying or if this was even a suitable fishing spot.
Turns out this spot was great. We wandered through the forest a bit and hit a few dead ends before we found this hidden gem of a spot. The grass was so tall and even though we both had rainwear on Although being a bit slippery due to the rain it had two perfect spots to plant your feet with decent spacing apart. It also had great depth for being such a narrow line of water so we could let our lures sink a bit.
It didn't take long for both @emuse and me to feel the first nibbles on our lures. Only five minutes in I reeled in my first catch of the day. A decently sized pollack. Shortly after we had gutted and bagged it @emuse reeled in another one of roughly the same size. We quickly understood that if we were to reel in catches at this rate we would have to wait and gut several at a time so we didn't stand there gutting all day.
The catch of the day was this big cod that I reeled in. He put up a decent fight but I took it easy during the reeling and managed to drag his fat ass on shore eventually. The waters outside my little spot was in favor of the cod as it was pretty deep just outside of my spot. My line was pointing straight downwards for a good while while I was reeling.
It took a but of time before I even realized this was a cod. He was hiding his little beard flick for me so at first I thought he was a bit of a bigger pollack but the color and pattern wasn't right. Getting a cod was both unexpected and awesome. My favorite fish dishes comes from cod so were gonna have us a decent meal off of this guy. His life will not go to waste.
In total we caught eight fish, kinda. I reeled in three pollacks and the cod while @emuse reeled in three pollacks, one which we let back out due to its small sise. @emuse also had some sort of beast on her hook that ended up tearing the line. It was most likely another cod as the strength and struggle of that thing looked a lot like it did when I reeled in my cod. It's a shame it got away but what sucks even more is that there's a fish swimming around with a hook in his mouth now. Let's hope it loosens up somehow and he doesn't have to suffer from it.
We didn't weigh or measure any of our fish but down below you can see a size comparison of them all. The cod of course owning the table with its size.
When it comes to filleting the fish our skillset is a bit lacking. I haven't been fishing since going fishing with my dad back in the day and at that time he always took care of both the filleting and the cooking. We watched some YouTube videos and did our best. We wanted to get this as right as we could so that we didn't spoil any of the meat.
The first few fillets didn't turn out great but we did get some decently sized fillets off of them. The biggest issue was dealing with the bones.
The pollack fillets will be fried in the pan and eaten with bread or we might fry up some vegetables and turn it into a dinner meal. We also got a bowl of meat that we scraped off the bones that will be used for fish cakes to be put on some bread. The cod will turn into its own meal. We'll probably bake the fillets in the oven on top of some vegetables with a cheese topping or something. We're gonna have to dig into our reciped.
This fishing trip was really awesome and it's definitely something we're gonna be doing more often now that we have the gear. This spot was only a 10 minute walk or 2 bus stops from our house so it's quite accessible.
Thanks for reading. Happy Pusen out.
Sending some beneficiary @emuse's way for borrowing some pictures off of her.

I haven't gone fishing in my life. I have seen a lot of horror movies how people die because they get killed by sharks. It plays so much in my head that I also get scared of swimming.
But I love to eat fish a lot by the way. I am sure you and your family will have a fantastic meal prepared with fresh fish.
Haha, I guess it depends where you live. We don't have any dangerous kinds of fish near our coasts. I do have a fear of deep water though. I just can't stand seeing into deep blue water not knowing what might be down there.
I always love catching my own food. I'm currently waiting for bass to start running in my area to go out and fish some. When they start running the wharf becomes the local hang out spot at night, and there's so much around all you have to do is drop your line right off the edge of the wharf.
Glad to see you had an awesome time! Bet cha they'll taste great!
That's awesome! We're definitely gonna be exploring more fishing spots in our area after this awesome trip. We caught 8 fish (1 got away and 1 released) in 4 hours so we were pretty happy. Not quite like just dropping the line though.
The reason why bass is so easy to catch where I'm at is because the waters are polluted with them, which sucks because they're an invasive species. They put up one hell of a fight though and are fun to reel in.
8 fish in 4 hours is pretty damn good. There were a few times I was out for that long with only nibbles and no bites.
Cool!
Some nice catch there..
That big one is quite large. :)
I think the biggest thing I ever caught was a big FROG one time.. 🐸 ribbit!
How'd it taste?
I'll be finding out today! We'll be cooking the cod with a sweet potato stew and some fried vegetables and bacon.
😋 yum!
Oh, your fishing skill is going up. You are at level 1/99.
I was always interested in fishing, but the closest I ever got was underwater fishing (With harpoons and stuff, I'm from an island so that's the most common way of fishing there).
That kind of fishing scared the shit of me sometimes because fish in open sea are big as shit. The first few times you get pretty scared.
I've never tried that. My fear of water would probably take me out before I even got close to any fish.
Very good fishing brother, the truth is that I am not very fond of fish and much less the activity to catch them, but many if you have a lot of fun. A pleasure to read it. Greetings!
I wasn't a big fan of fish before but it all depends how you cook it. I can both hate and love fish.
I haven't gone fishing since I was a kid! My dad and I would go to this beach with a massive jetty on it (Port Germein, longest jetty in Australia), go all the way to the end, and away our lines would go. I don't remember ever catching anything sizeable though. My main catch was finding cuttlefish bones in the sand while walking around instead. 😅
It looks like you both had a great time, and a few decent catches!
Good ol' Youtube for learning how to do things 😊 I hope your future fishy meals are delicious!
Haha, those are great memories to have!
The spot we chose has very little activity in terms of boats and such so I guess the fishes aren't afraid to peek their heads out.
Nice catch! I used to go fishing almost every day during spring & summer back in my college year in Canada. We need to have a fishing license and there's a daily limit catch too. My favorite is the Northern Pike (Jackfish). Not only do they taste good but they also give a good fight!
Cool! There's a few spots you'll need a license in Norway but that's mostly for freshwater and rivers to control populations. The coast is free for all.
Dude you unlocked a beautiful memory for me :), when I was a kid I used to go with my grandfather to the countryside, he always took me fishing.
That's awesome! I hope you can get to go fishing again someday.
I clicked on the link from @emuse post and had fun reading your fishing tale. Funny thing, I have never seen or looked up what a cod fish looks like and it's my favorite one to eat - same as you! @pusen
Nice catches! 🐟🎣 🐟
Cool! The cods are quite easy to recognize from the brown color but their main identifiable trait is the little beard hanging form their chin.
Thank you!
Damn, thanks for reminding me that I finally need to motivate my lazy ass and go back to fishing. Big congrats, both of you!
Exelent, grattis grattis =) I wish I was able to go fish, I really miss it. Just cosmic unluck I guess. =( But nice to see the fishing luck has not abandoned you after al the years =)
You cannot beat cod that you have caught yourself!
A delicious fish, well done to the pair of you!
Bon appetit man. the cod looks quite big. He will accompany you for a good dinner. By the way if you want to see @pusen's catch earlier you can join the ocd discord 😂
The closest thing I've been to fishing in my life was in minecraft hahaha but that place looks beautiful, very calm, it transmits peace, it's good that they have fished so much and that the meat is used.
In the last 10 years I've done more fishing in video games than I have in real life as well. I hope that changes now.
hahaha is that fishing in video games is relaxing, I hope there are more of pusen in nature
I've never fishing in my life. But I think it could be FUN.

@pusen What you learn as a boy is never forgotten, thanks to your father's teachings. I congratulate you, good fishing you got, it doesn't matter if you don't know how to fillet, you still eat them. LOL.
It's like you are a macing fan. I like to see your fishing activity
