Thousands of motorists pass by it every day but never glance at it unless it's pink? I've driven many times over the west gate bridge on my way into the city from the western suburbs, but I've never been interested in what's around it. It wasn't until recently that I searched for things to do around. The beautiful pink lake caught my attention and it's right here in Melbourne, I think I heard about it long ago when I yet came to Australia but I had no idea it's so close...!! If you type "salt lake in Melbourne" on Google, you'll be overwhelmed with breathtaking images of the pinky stunning lake and could resist to come for photograph !!

I was so excited and decided to drive to Westgate park. Even though I knew beforehand that the lake may not be as pink as it appears in photographs due to weather conditions or other reasons, there was still a part of me that hoped to see its vibrant hue in all its glory. 🙂

When I arrived I saw a notice on the board: "Westgate park salt water lake is no longer pink". It lost its pink color in mid-May 2019". They can't predict if or when the pink color will return. No doubt, if the lake was still pink, people would surely flock from far and wide to see it.

Well, let's hope ❤️

No pink no problem. We had a nice walk around the lake and learned about the Westgate Bridge that I often drive across. It's a crucial transportation route linked the city and the western suburbs. From what I learned, it's 55 meter high and a structural engineering marvel that shadows the park it created name with Westgate park. This impressive bridge has been a vital part of Melbourne's infrastructure since its construction in 1978.

Sadly, I was told about its tragic history, a catastrophic incident occurred that claimed many lives and forever changed workplace safety standards in Australia.

The trees try their hardest to muffle the sound of traffic but are just beaten by the echoes of traffic on the bridge. As I meandered through the walking trails that crisscross the park, I came across some fascinating works of art scattered throughout the area. I had to remind myself how close we were to the city, literally 5 mins away. Hence, not to far to find a little peace of nature away from the hustle and bustle CBD. Seeing the bridge up close, we were in awe at its enormous size and scale. Such an incredible structure was designed, engineered, and constructed by Melbourne people with a lot of effort and hard work. ❤️

It was a bit overcast but we had a great walk at such a natural inspring space closes to the bustling cityscape above!! If you're in Melbourne, may I suggest you to find this hidden gem called Westgate park and enjoy!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog, and I hope you enjoy our walk.

Sorry to hear that the pink lake wasn´t actually pink when you came there but in fact, this is quite common with these salt pink lakes as their color depends on many factors. We saw some of these lakes in Mexico. They were not at their "pinkest" either but still some cool hues :)

Yes we will never know when the lake will have colour but even still it was very beautiful to visit. I'm sure in Mexico would be very beautiful as well :)

Thanks for your sharing @phortun and have a lovely weekend :)

"Westgate park salt water lake is no longer pink". It lost its pink color in mid-May 2019"

Awww that's so sad! I looked at some pictures and it looked incredible. Do you know what made it pink and why its no longer pink? If it was such an amazing tourist attraction, if I were the city authorities I'd be filling it with food dye to get the colour back!

Keep living your best life and have a wonderful week :-)

I was told the presence of certain types of algae combined with the weather condition turned the water pink. I'm not sure how this phenomenon has impacted on the ecosystem, but it's something fantastic to see. :)

I hope your week is off to a great start :)

The lake is already picturesque, how much more if it has full of water on it in pink color? That must be glorious! 🌸

I wonder what made it pink though. But still, there's a lot more to see in the place.😊 It still is amazing.

Hehe. Oh, I found it, it's in the photo.😊

That's interesting how the water appeared pink.

thank you @callmesmile I was curious too, yeah it was explained in that picture and I also heard from the local that the algae in the water combined with the weather's condition turned the water's color into pink. There is no doubt that dyeing with pink would be a more unusual phenomenon and gorgeous :)

Have you been to Lake Tyrrell it seems about 4 hours from Melbourne and is pretty damn impressive. I knew the pink would be from algae on the salts but it odd to think sometimes the algae gets wiped out so to speak. Here we often see algae taking over ponds and lakes and not in a good way!

I presume Jetti had a great time though, and did not care if the water was pink or not :)

I've been told the same :) I've lived in Melb for a year but haven't discovered much, my first time hearing about Lake Tyrrell. I just checked its location, and it's in Grampians where I visited not too long ago, damn how I could miss it..!! It looks incredible. That's great, thanks and now I have more reasons to return to Grampians soon after the winter season :)

Hehe I love to explore places, but I have never been to Melbourne or Grampians, but Grampians is a big hilly area in Scotland so I got curious to see what is near you!
Ah well you have lots to explore😁

We appreciate your work and your publication has been hand selected by the geography curation team on behalf of the Amazing Nature Community. Keep up the good work!

Thanks :)

It is a wonderful little park under the west gate and the pinkness is due to stagnate water and PH changes which tend to occur in summer with long periods of no rain. A wonderful natural environmental phenomena. I thought they were died pink at one stage. I remember there used to be giant balls in the middle of the water and the myth was that they had fallen off the back of a trunk driving over the westgate bridge.

Thanks @melbourneswest Good to learn why it was no longer pink. I remember seeing this internet a few years ago, but I had no idea it was in Melbourne, and I wish I could see it someday. Sadly, I'm here now it's no longer pink. :)

Will check Lake Tyrrell next time 😀
