Hi everyone, and a happy ember month to you all. Today, I will be sharing with you how I made this corset bustier as opposed to the corset top I originally wanted to make. Before I kick off into details, I would like to share how I came about my obsession with the art of needlework, as I believe my story is pertinent for you to properly understand why I arrived at what I would call an amendable blunder.
——
I learned how to sew about three years ago, but I only practiced for one month before having to suspend my learning to further my education. In such a limited time, one can imagine that I hadn’t learned much, as people typically spend months, if not years, perfecting such a craft. I only had a month, and there was only so much I could learn in that time.
What i wanted making vs what i actually ended up making
——
Long story short, within that month, I managed to sew a skirt and a peplum top, and with that knowledge, I could make a dress and a proper top and skirt. Fast forward two years later, in my second year, I decided to take sewing more seriously and started trying out more advanced styles with the help of YouTube. After all, life is all about taking risks.
And that is how I ended up here. As lovely as this outfit looks, it happens to be one of my many first failed attempts to recreate a design. But I believe one of the beauties of sewing is that there’s nothing that is unfixable; even the worst outfits gone wrong can be adjusted with a little patience.
All that is required are:
- a yard of fabric of your choice
- Lining
- Gum stay
- Bra cup
- A matching thread
- Boning (optional)
- Loops
- A strap for the back
——
Here are the measurements I used to achieve my bustier.
Length:16
Bust: 35
Underbust: 30
Nipple to nipple :7
Waist: 29
Strap :16
Here is a list of mistakes I think I made while attempting the corset top I intended to make.
Firstly, I believe I would have taken my arm yoke a bit forward.
I believe I could have added all my necessary allowance on the cutting paper.
Also, I believe I could have measured the lining more accurately.
I believe I should have taken the initiative to buy regular boning and create a boning channel to avoid jumping stitches on the regaling bonning.
Most people expect a well-finished, perfectly done dress, and this platform, I mean, who wouldn’t? But today I decided to post something more relatable. As fashion designers, we all had that stage when we didn’t know it all and were still figuring things out. By posting this, I do not just aim to be totally transparent in my experience as an upcoming fashion designer, but I wish to inspire those who are at their learning stage and remind our well-abled fashion designers why consistency is key.
a sneak peek on how far i had gone with the corset top before realizing i made so many blunders
I may not have succeeded in recreating this top; nevertheless, I’m glad I attempted to recreate the style, although it was really frustrating, as I have never really had much of a failed attempt on my first try, but just as Justin Bieber said, NEVER SAY NEVER.
I do hope to try this again, and I will definitely share my progress with you all.
Feel free to share with me if you think there is something I could have done differently.
Thank you for your time. I still remain @gemangel 🌹.
I think the best thing to do is to try what we want, because then we realise how much we know. It turned out very well anyway, and I'm sure it will go much better every time :)

I can totally relate with your story, the struggle between having to learn in school and also wanting to pick up a skill
This came out even better than I expected of a Newman in fashion.
Well done dear
