Prepping for My Crochet 101 Mini Workshop for Moms

There's a special kind of happiness when moms help moms. This is what I feel whenever I attend seminars intended for moms, led by moms, and facilitated by moms. My journey as a first time mom was made easy by the mom groups I joined in on my social media before. All my questions there were answered patiently and lovingly by moms. When I finally found my footing, I, in return also got to answer questions from first time moms. And that's what gives that special kind of happiness. You know that when you help a mom, that help you gave will extend and reach other people too.

Just a few weeks ago, while chatting with my fellow moms in our homeschooling provider's cluster meet, I had this urge to conduct a mini crochet workshop. Originally, I wanted to teach the kids. But then I realized, most of the kids in our cluster were still too young. They haven't acquired the required dexterity and patience needed in crocheting. Then one mom said she would join even if it's for kids.

Then it dawned on me, I could just teach the moms, who in turn, will also teach their kids once they see they're ready! It's a win-win! I get to teach - which turns out to be one of my passions, the moms get to acquire new skills, and I get to have new crocheting buddies if everything turns out right!

So now, I prepare for my mini workshop. One of the moms suggested we do it at a notnso busy restaurant nearby where there's a playplace. That's the thing about moms, we always have to take our kids into consideration whenever we make plans. We looked for the most feasible place. The time we chose was non-rush period so that we could enjoy the place for ourselves. There's just a handful of moms joining so I think this place should be good. If worse comes to worst, we'll take our mini workshop somewhere else, there's a nearby park we can hang out at. It won't be as comfy as the restaurant but at least we have a back up plan.

Now that the place and time is settled, I just need to prepare the material I'm going to present. This mini workshop is intended for beginners with basic to zero knowledge in ceochet. Still, I'm going to give a refresher course. I'll be introducing or re-introducing to them the bsic stitches. A lot of them have been busy working, taking care of their family, and teaching their kids, there's a chance that if they knew how to crochet before, they might have already forgotten it. I know I did.

I'll also teach them how to read patterns. I purchased crochetimg books before that took me a while to understand. There are crochet patterns that use abbreviations and letters. You'd see things like

ch30+3, dc on 5th st, 4dc on same st, ch3, sk3, 5dc on 4th st, cont to end.

There are also patterns that use sticks and crosses and hooks and such. You'd see things like circles, x's, T's, T with a slash at thr middle, etc. The first time I saw patterns like this, I thought I was reading black magic. My mom taught me how to crochet when I was 9 and it was all done verbally so I had to learn these things on my own. This is one of the first things I'll teach in my mini crochet 101 workshop.

I am excited about this mini workshop. I keep saying it's a workshop, but really, it's just my attempt to make genuine connections with moms who also go through what I go through in our homeschooling journey. Also, I'd really love to have more crocheting buddies. What a wonderful sight it would be to just hang out at coffee shops, have some marites moments with fellow moms while we are working on our own projects. I sure am going to show some of my needleworkmonday posts. Who knows, they might get curious and want to join the platform. Lol!

Thanks! It was actually a success! :)

I laughed🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 when you said you thought you were reading black magic
🤣🤣🤣🤣

It’s so true, first timers find it weird to see written pattern so it’s a great initiative to teach them all of that. You’re doing great

I had to learn those all by myself since my mom only taught me verbally when I was young. It's a great skill to learn so why not share it with other, right?

Yeah that’s right

Teaching is in your blood😁😁 but I’m glad that you’d get to teach some mums about crocheting and they’d teach their kids.
Some of them may even get more serious with it and take it as a career

Yeah. I see all of them are taking it seriously. They've been messaging me their progress pics.

I don't know how to knit anything ☹️☹️, I would love to see this workshop, I admire your talent!

Oh. I'd love to do this online too. Sometime maybe. We'll never know what the future holds. 😅

Pakibulong mo sa akin yung preparations mo pa and some materials na pwede magamit sis. I might need it in the future. 😍
