Siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus), or often known as the Black Gibbon, is one of the typical primates of the tropical forests of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. With its jet black fur, distinctive high-pitched voice, and arboreal behavior, Siamang is an important icon of the remaining rainforest ecosystem in Southeast Asia.

Siamang is the largest species in the gibbon family (Hylobatidae), with a body length of around 90 cm and a weight of up to 14 kg. One of the characteristics of the siamang is the large vocal sac under its chin, which can expand to produce a loud and resonant sound. This sound is not only used to mark territory, but also as a means of communication between group members.

They are arboreal primates, spending more time in trees than on the ground. With long and strong arms, siamangs move agilely from one branch to another.

Siamang inhabit lowland rainforests up to an altitude of around 1500 meters above sea level. Their natural habitat is in Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, including in conservation areas such as Gunung Leuser National Park in Indonesia. However, habitat destruction due to deforestation and land conversion is a major threat to their population.

As fruit eaters, siamangs play an important role in spreading plant seeds, helping regenerate forests. They also eat leaves, flowers, and insects, making them a species that contributes to the balance of the forest ecosystem.
