RE: The DAO's Dilemma: Spending Packs for Growth and Sustainability

in Splinterlands4 months ago

In my opinion there is an underlying question that should have been asked a long time ago.

You will hear on town halls that they (the team) have always been trying to make a game that they would want to play and that's good but I think what also should have been asked is "what game would people at a lower income bracket than us want to play?"

You can't design an economy solely based on whales and high income earners. You have to include the lower income brackets because that is the consumer class. The lower income brackets are the consumption class, the engine that drives the economy, they buy millions of pairs of pants, shoes, lunches, lottery scratchers, coffees, toys, entertainment, etc., etc..

The lowest 1% of earners in the US spend an average of $600 a year on lottery scratchers. I stopped buying lottery scratchers when I started playing Splinterlands
because why should I waste my money on a lottery scratcher where I can lose all of that money when I can buy a SPL pack and never lose only win less and then use that asset to earn more?

With the release of free to play and also the upcoming Conclave Arcana common packs this is being addressed. I'm not saying you can't have whale stuff, by all means go ahead but up until now my question is:

What income demographics are the team shooting for with these card series?

Because I make $70Kish a year and I have been playing since 03/2021 and I still don't have a max level Rebellion deck. None of my Rebellion summoners are max level.

Despite that

I am constantly buying Rebellion packs
I sell every gold foil and use that DEC to buy more Rebellion cards or packs or potions to open Rebellion packs
I sold all of my old cards to buy Rebellion packs
I even sell every BCX of the Squirrel or EMP and buy more Rebellion packs hoping to get one of the other legendary summoners
I harvest and sell all my grain for DEC and buy Rebellion packs or cards or potions to open Rebellion packs

My commons are level 8 and my common summoners are between 7 and 9 and my legendary summoners are level 3.
I just bought 50 packs the other day and opened them with full potions and only got 1 legendary.

I bet if you ask whales if Rebellion is taking too long they will say yes. If you ask me I will say that I need more time to buy Rebellion packs and if you ask someone that is at a lower income bracket they will look at it as impossible to get a max level Rebellion deck.

I'm not suggesting some form of socialism be introduced into the economy before you reply to this with that comment.

If this is the way it is meant to be and that is where I fall on that scale of ability to own assets then OK I guess I can accept that to some degree but what if there was a way for me to top up my deck without engorging the price gougers that are going to start up when Rebellion packs are no longer for sale, just like they did with Untamed and Dice? Do any of you remember that? When those card series were coming to end of sales the whales went in and bought them up and afterwards stuck them on the WAX market for 10-50X the original price.

A lot of you don't remember that because of CL but that is what is going to happen again with RB to a lesser degree but still.

I'm not suggesting price controls (as in interfering with how much a person is able to list a pack price at on the secondary market) but perhaps the DAO could in some way mitigate the price gouging that is about to happen with RB pack sales end.

That's my first point.

My second point:
Why isn't the game translated to Spanish yet?

The DAO could use these packs to help Spanish speaking content creators that are Billingual interact and help Spanish speaking only people play the game and keep them updated and market to that demographic.

The DAO could sell RB packs on the secondary market to mitigate the price gouging and these are soul bound packs meaning they can't be transferred or sold and this can fund the translation of the game to Spanish or voice overs or marketing to the Spanish community. And separately the DAO can give non soul bound packs to Spanish content creators to give away.

Sort:

That is a lengthy response with lots questions, thank for the response 🤣

First of, i agree on that point that currently SPL is focused imho on the whales and highly competitive player in the top league. They are missing out on the casual players with limited budget. Not sure what they need todo for that.

You are ahead on the rebellion in comparison to my so great job there 💪, you probably have a fun time when chaos rotates out of modern.

On the point if the DAO should just sell the pack that is an option but needs to be handled with care putting that much pack will drive the price down for rebellion packs and cards, this will upset many players that have already invested. Still if handled with care closely watching the market needs and jump on that is time consuming job, who will do that?

On your second point, i hope now that the team is on a "tech modernization" its more easy. By default you should build a web application with translation in by default then translation should be very limited cost.
That is more an SPL thing that a DAO thing imho.
