There are a few steps indeed, stake sps (rented or owned), have cards (rented or owned) and play.
That are the main ingredients.

As @warrentrx says join a guild would be very nice start and ask around in discord. Either the discord of SPL or the guild you have joined.
Many are willing you guide you in your journey.

First and foremost take your time to explore what is best for you and enjoy 😁
