To make earning in splinterlands, what to do? I mean from basic. do i need to purchase decks? i have been playing, but without purchasing any cards, so i am not making anything. although, i have developed good understanding about gameplay, what is the way forward.

There are a few steps indeed, stake sps (rented or owned), have cards (rented or owned) and play.

As @warrentrx says join a guild would be very nice start and ask around in discord. Either the discord of SPL or the guild you have joined.
Many are willing you guide you in your journey.
