I do not consider myself a gold foil collector but never the less over the years of playing Splinterlands I have collected a small collection of gold foil cards. As of now I have about 10% of my entire collection in gold foil which does not seem like a lot however my gold foil collection is valued at 20% of my overall collection and earns me about 25% of my total rental revenue. So it would might be a good discussion as to why having gold foil cards can be beneficial and look at the drawbacks.
Limited Supply and Higher DEC Burn Value
As title of this section implies gold foil cards are less cards in circulation than regular cards. In addition burn value of gold foil are higher than regular.
Gold foil version of a card is 50 times the DEC burn rate of its regular counterpart.
The odds of a gold foil card print?
Card Drop Rates
75.2% - Common
20% - Rare
4% - Epic
0.8% - Legendary
Each card has a 2% chance turning Gold
Its hard enough to get a legendary but on top of that only a 2% chance that the legend be of gold foil. Yikes! Fortunately if players are opening packs such as Untamed and Dice there is the alchemy potion that can be used to increase the gold foil drop to 4%. This is a must for players who open booster packs because once a pack is open the cards are forever minted in the form they are in whether regular or gold foil. Hence there is no exact amount of gold foils per a card but due to the low odds of obtaining one it is very low in supply among all rarities relative to their regular counterpart.
Higher Prices Means Lower Sales
A drawback of having gold foil cards is that some rarity gold foils such as epic and legends by default will cost hundreds of dollars due to its DEC burn rate values. For example a beta epic worth 15k DEC is an equivalent of $105 at present DEC value of $0.007 / DEC. Of course with supply low many sellers will likely have a sell value higher than $105 making the beta epic a bit harder to sell because there are less people with that sort of liquidity available. So it will likely take a lot longer to sell a gold foil for profit compare to its regular counterpart.
On the flip side if owner of the gold foil were to rent out the card they will likely earn more as it will earn higher daily rent than a regular card. In addition gold foil cards by default have higher stats at 1 bcx and has reduced quantities needed stack to max level.
Bonuses for Owning Gold Foils?
In rank battles each gold foil card used will earn player 10% more DEC per a win. The gold foil bonus can be stack hence a player has the potential of earning up to 70% in DEC bonus if they use all cards in match as gold foil, 1 summoner and 6 monsters. Furthermore Alpha and Promo editions has another 10% DEC bonus that can also stake on top of gold foil.
Presently the biggest rewards in events/tournaments are from events that require gold foil cards. This is because the high price of ownership of such cards deserves the higher rewards for using them in events.
In addition to events allowing only gold foil cards to be used in battles there are also brawls that limit only gold foil cards. Certain frays in brawls are for gold foil cards only which in turn means guilds will only thrive in brawls if they have members who have gold foil decks. Without those decks the guilds will end up not competing in those frays which leads to less overall points and brawl rewards.
Conclusions
Prices of cards in general has risen a lot in the past two months and supply of cards in the open market are at the lowest ever since the inception of the game. This has lead to a lot of widening in prices especially with gold foil cards. What is key though is gold foil cards hold up in value and benefits players when they are used. There is a better payback to using gold foil cards but at current open market prices it would take epic amount of currency to buy most of the gold foils to amass a competitive collection.
Bottom line if you plan to play Splinterlands long term it maybe worth wild to hold some gold foil cards in your collection. You may not immediately be rewarded with the large sum invested in gold foil, but in the long run the additional bonuses of earning more DEC will eventually lead you to break even in the gold foil investments.

the price of the GFL’s are crazy right now. Cheapest one is going for is like 500-600 bucks.
For me the benefits are the sps air drop points you get for them. but it’s tough to be in the market to be a buyer for them now lol
Oh good point about earning more SPS as gold foil does have more collective power points. Indeed gold foil cards are expensive but don't necessarily have to go for epic and legend. Instead look for commons and rares and compare their price difference with regular versions. Sometimes the price difference between gold foil similar level with regular is not much and best yet you may find a gold version of same level cheaper than regular. Example Magma Troll regular level 3:

If you don't mind the cool down and to pay like $2 more for a gold version I would say gold is the better option. Get 10% more DEC per win and a limited supply. I am just scratching the surface as there are likely even better opportunities out there but it takes time to find them.

so I'm almost 3 weeks into gameplay and I feel lucky that I got a gold foil phantasm from a daily quest chest. I really didn't know what they were for. I don't use phantasm much but I may try to use it in battle now that I know, or just rent it out.

Bingo! Exactly what I do too. Most of my reward gold foil are either used or when I have multiple I rent out the extra. I don't have to stake them to get stronger as I focus more toward better price at reselling them at 1 bcx. Everyone has a different strategy but I think ours works really well.
