Finally, we have the long anticipated land expansion. Here are my key take aways from the first 24 hours.
I am a player-investor meaning I enjoy playing the game but I also want to maximize my returns. As we all know the later has been a challenge recently. I invested heavily and made some good and bad choices.
Land plots are currently overpriced
It could have gone both ways but by now its relatively clear that especially the more rare land plots are overpriced. Even if we see a 10x for SPS from here, making back the same value will take too long.
Cards are fairly priced or undervalued
Cards are more important than the rarity or type of a land plot. Meaning good cards on common plots can relatively easily outcompete epic and legendary plots.
SPS production on land is small
Some people anticipated that Land 1.5 will be like a second SPS airdrop. We know by now this is not the case. We are still far away from people having all their land deployed and SPS on maxed out regular alpha cards (common to legendary) on an epic occupied is somewhere around 7 SPS per hour. This will only decrease further when more plots clear.
Many keeps are extremly overpriced but will increase in value over time
On many less active tracts Keeps produce almost nothing. As land becomes more active Keeps will produce more. They are a long term play.
Many players will have to decide if they want to battle or farm land
I was considering to move from actively playing battles to maximizing land. I know by now that this makes very little sense with my cards and I will only work very few plots and save many cards for playing battles. This will produce a higher SPS return than going fully into land.
Old cards are for land, new cards (rebellion) for playing battles
With the higher production power I will reserve my old cards for land and my newer cards for rebellion. As I accumulate more rebellion cards I will gradually and slowly increase what I stake on land. A all-in approach makes little sense.
Don't buy keeps first
Some players first sell you keeps so you have incentive to buy overpriced normal plots in the same tract. It might be better to buy a keep in a region with few plots for sale and that are owned by multiple players that won't floor all at once.
What would I have done differently?
In summary, I bought quite a few alpha cards, land plots and dec to farm land. Knowing what I know now, I would have done things differently.
- My card investments were smart. Card prices have increased a lot with land and I believe they will appreciated further. This was in a way expected. Alpha cards seem to be so much more scarce than land.
- I paid too much for land plots. I purchased a legendary magic and an epic occupied but common plots with better cards easily outcompete my production. Retrospectively this was a bad investment.
In summary: For my situation, a balanced approach seems to be best. For me it makes sense to carefully weigh which cards I will stake on land and which I will use to play. An all-in approach in either direction seems to be less productive, especially for maximinzing SPS.
What will I do next?
I expect land plots to drop further over the next months. If this happens I will consider either buying a tract or more land plots. I plan to also snipe a lot of cards that have a good price / production power value and gradually over many months stake them onto an expanding collection of plots.
The plan is to gradually replace my oldest cards with rebellion cards, so I can keep my diamond ranking while farming a little bit on land as well.
