The Brit List: August 2023

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I use Python with beem (by @holger80) in a script to generate what you see here. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

Those based in the UK can use the #teamuk tag for an extra vote. If you see people using it on non-relevant posts then drop them a friendly comment to point out that is not encouraged.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version.

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

• Active as above.
• Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
• Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile.

Commentary

We have a few less active again this month. I get that the $HIVE price may be considered low, but you can still earn a few quid from a post that may gain value eventually. Even if you just set up automatic votes you will earn.

I would hope that people are talking to friends who were previously active on Hive to let them know that it is still an option, especially as the corporate platforms get worse. Facebook is full of ads and 'suggested content'. Twitter is deteriorating as the new owner turns it into his vision of 'freedom'. Hive has some issues with extremist views and disagreements over rewards, but most people just get on with using it. The troublemakers are a small minority.

I am not finding many new accounts lately. A few older ones have started posting again and that is a good sign. If we want it to grow then we ought to do what we can to recruit new people. Maybe Hive is not for everyone, but content creators have opportunities and those interested in cryptocurrency in general would find a natural home whilst understanding the technology. One issue with onboarding someone is the learning curve. We do lack well organised tutorials. Some of the older ones may be out of date. I created an account for someone (not in the UK) recently and I pointed him to some of these:

• The FAQs on Peakd and Hive.blog.
• This fun tutorial by @ryzeonline. The last I can see is that he went back to web 2.0.
• A guide that I wrote.

I think we need some community action to build a more comprehensive list.

We gained three Dolphins and an Orca, so people are powering up.

Meetups

There is a meetup next month in Halifax. I probably will not get there. This is the third hosted by @c0ff33a and I hope I will get there one day.

Have you looked at what LeoFinance are doing with their Proposal 269 ? Although it's still in the voting stages, it looks like they've already done a lot of the work in terms of simplifying the onboarding process and creating guided tutorials to help people with the learning curve.

But yeah, it seems really hard to recruit people. I wonder if part of it is that people see what is going on with Web2 social media and all it's adverts and censorship, and assume that when we tell them "there's a better way" they just don't believe it and assume all social media is the same. Or perhaps we need a "Hive-Tok" for short-form video content for people with short attention spans 😀

I do believe that some don't think it can work and others are just crypto-sceptical. Some of those you met on the walk got into it with little help from me, but there are initial hurdles with basics like key management. For that we need tutorials. Video may be better for some, but I'm not good at making those.

Last night I tried to get am old account wisbeech to start again. He said he might not I know the long form aspect of it all is slightly off-putting to some. I am sure though that as we get near the bitcoin halving asked the potential altcoin season that follows we will see some increase in numbers
