Some things i have thought of in gold-money are small bits of gold being embedded in another material.
Like a dollar bill, with a window (plastic) with like a piece of gold foil, encased between two sheets of plastic, embossed into some shape, detail.
Also, may be done in coin form (thicker plastic) with a piece of gold embedded in it.
It may work, it may not. It may never come about because of bitcoin. Or maybe it will because of it.

It is similar, but my way keeps the gold layer away from being abraded off. And is a little easier to make, and a little more apparent it is gold.
According to this video, they lay down the gold at the atomic level...
Your idea seems cool as well, where you could see that there is a little chunk of gold there. How do you prevent someone from creating a fake version and just putting some gold colored thing in there?
Yep, it is sprayed down. I think what goldbacks do is ingenious, but i still do not seriously like it. If people start recognizing and accepting it, i will change my mind.
First line of defense will be these kind of metal detectors that are really focussed on gold.
Then it will be all like what we do with large denomination dollars. We use special paper, special ink, and other identifiers.
But, someone may making a scanning xray machine specifically for gold. That tallies up how much gold atoms it sees. Or something like that.
I think our Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium Coins will be all we really need to back our Paper coinage, our Electronic Coinage and our Common U.S. Coinage... We already have Staggering amounts of Common U.S. Coinage... Our Money will be Sound and very Stable...
