There was a movie that got me interested in Greek mythology when I was a kid. I want to say it was Jason and the Argonauts. It was so long ago, I am not sure. However, since that time when a Greek mythology related movie is playing, I like watching it. I even want to see the new movie The Return which is about Ulysses return home after years of being away at sea after the Trojan War.
One story that really interests me is that of the story of the Lost City of Atlantis. Anytime I find a documentary or even a silly show about Atlantis, I will watch it. Although many agree that Atlantis was a fictional city created in Plato's mind, it must have had inspiration.
Well, it seems Mason Mint out of Dade City, Florida, USA was inspired by the story of the Lost City of Atlantis as well. They came out with the below 1 ounce silver round at some point. I am not sure when. It is supposed to be part of a mythical cities series, but from what I can tell they only minted this one and one for Asgard.
The obverse has Poseidon, the Greek god of the seas. You can see the greek God is his full armor and holding his trident. There is a temple and sea life in the background.
The reverse displays what is supposed to be the undersea ruins of Atalntis. You cna see varied sea life among the ruins. There are fish, a whale, shareks, stingrays and more.
This partcular round is 1 ounce and 99% silver. The wife even fell in love with the design when she saw it. That said though, it still goes in the stack. No special treatment for the God of the Seas and his Lost City in my house.
If you have any further information about this coin you would like to add, like historical information I left out or want to correct any I may have gotten wrong, please drop it in the comments.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

I always kind of think that the idea of Atlantis was probably based a little on the cultural memory of when the previous ice age ended and all the lands that were exposed were then flooded. I'm sure the memory of watching entire cities flooded and destroyed hung around with people and was passed down.
Anyway, awesome coin!
It very well could be. There are some really logical theories out there with regard to some possibilities.
I like it, but that's not available on my side of the border.
I had written a simple draft of a fictional story regarding Atlantis as an empire but it is long lost with my Christmas Cactus in my move to my current residence.
Thanks for sharing @coinjoe 🐟
I picked it up on eBay if that makes any difference.
Do hope you can find the story you wrote, I’d love to read it.
Cool coin and I also share interest in Greek mythology and Atlantis is included in it.
That's super cool! Have you seen the theory that there is a spot in Africa that they think may have been the city. At the very least maybe Plato visited there and then concocted his story. It's quite interesting and the present a lot of facts.
I have not seen that theory. Or at least I don't recall it. If you know of a documentary or video, please share. I would love to watch.
I don't know what to think about Atlantis, but am leaning towards thinking it may have been a real place that existed from far before the time of ancient Egypt even.
The coin is interesting as it took me a second look before the king came into view for me. I like the detail of the coin and hope to one day get back into the habit of coin collecting on my own.
Yeah, I find ancient civilizations, mythical or real, to be intriguing.
I hope you do it is a wonderful hobby, at least to me it is. This particular piece is actually a round and not a coin. A coin typically carries a fiat value, like your pocket change. A round is made just for looks and precious metal value. I didn't know this particular fact until I started stacking silver on top of my collecting. Learned it fromthe Silver Gold Stackers Community here on Hive.
So the Morgan silver dollar that I bought when I was ten was a coin and not a round. I always wondered if there was a difference between the usage ofv the two terms. So when you're deciding on your next purchase, I imagine you weigh all of that (looks and precious metal value vs picking up a coin) when you decide which one's a keeper? Very interesting.
among other considertations, yeah.
In the end, I just love to collect and read about the history behind the coin, the portraits and content on the coin, designers and their stories etc.
That is nice! I didn't realize they were in Dade City, I've been there before! Awesome round, I love the details in that one! I think most historians these days accept that it was Santorini before the volcano blew. That would have seriously sucked!
Thanks. I love the detail as well.
With regard to Santorini, I am famaliar with the theory and it is a strong one. I have not heard any archielogical studies though. I am sure they are doing them. Would love to see some NatGeo stuff about it. Yeah, having a volcano go off under your backside wouldn't be pleasant.
