It's a 2000 Maryland stake quarter that seems to have been struck twice. Modern error coins are very rare, especially to find in change, so this was a special treat.
The back looks pretty much normal, but clearly the front has been damaged during the minting process.
It's been fun playing with my new lightbox, it really does help get good photos of coins and other small items.
Can Anyone Identify This Error?
I have some ideas of what error type this is, but haven't confirmed it. If there are any hivians with coin error experience, please help me to identify what happened and an idea of it's value.

That’s not a mint error, there’s no way the back would be that perfect if the press caused that to the obverse. I’d still have someone check it but I’m like 90% positive on it.
Interesting, yes I would assume there would be damage to the back as well. Perhaps this is just a damaged quarter. I appreciate the evaluation! I'll follow up with what the forum evaluation comes back with, it may turn out to be nothing but a damaged quarter!
It only makes sense the two plates press into each other how could one produce that on the front without any damage to the back? 👍
Cool find but in my opinion looks like something bad happened to it after the minting process. Almost like it got caught in some machine that was able to sheer it! Still a cool find though!
Interesting, yes that is a possibility. I shouldn't assume it's an error until it's actually appraised. I found and joined an error coin forum and posted these photos, it'll be interesting what they have to say. Reading other posts, there are some they identify as damage or sometimes even fraudulent coins! Guess we'll see!

I've sat in on an error coin seminar but wasn't really paying much attention.
My opinion, I just think this was simply a vandalized coin for the two separately different and unrelated issues.
It might have been a mint error, or it might have been some damage while in circulation. I posted it in an error coin forum, I'll do a follow up post once I find out the assessment.
