“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven.
The Hong Kong Coin Show HKCS, Hong Kong International Numismatic Fair HKINF, and The HongKong International Coin & watch Convention HICC. are some of the huge venues involving hundreds of vendors, exhibitors mixing with buyers and sellers. It must be an awesome sight to see and something for everyone, perhaps one day I may visit Hong Kong and see for myself and bring plenty of cash.
Today’s silver will feature two of the new acquisitions of his recent show finds.
First, the Bonus Junk Silver
I admit it, I fell in love with this adorable little sterling silver Junk pendant Ben found. It is of Chinese origin but who made this is not known. I blame my itchy trigger finger Impulses so I got another one to be sure I made the right mistake. The second one is a 3D version I can blame on my depression.
The Silver Coin
We’re back again to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or more known as North Korea with this hidden gem, and I may be too generous in describing this as such, but I will leave it up to my readers to determine if I was being sarcastic, facetious or deadpan comedy.
Having seen many impressive colorized coins from various mints all over the world this 1996 North Korean made proof is rather underwhelming as its sister coins of the ‘Return of Hong Kong’ series. It does have a simple child-like charm to it and fits nicely into my Silver Ships collection. In a nutshell this kind of bullion coin falls into numismatics and not ideal for stacking unless you're crazy as I am.
I’ve noticed an uptick in the availability of North Korean commemorative coins from Ben’s stream of finds lately. These coins of very low mintage are usually seldom seen outside the country. I may be speculating here but are the well-to-do North Koreans selling their silver? In Hong Kong? It would be the place to free up needed cash.
Certain approved DRPK citizens are allowed to visit Hong Kong visa free. Considering North Korea’s small GDP is around $40B making the per capita income of $700USD and if inflation is bad in the Western countries, I would suspect it to be much worse in a country like North Korea.
Other Recent Musings
The flow of numismatics and precious metals lately has been net selling in the west according to recent observations of various Dealers. Dealer inventories are swelling followed by a drop in premiums. Even my local coin shop has been net buying, most being discounted silver and gold jewelry going into melt from customers needing cash to meet bills. ‘Jim’ also says that he’s been throwing a lot of his under 999 fine silver dead stock coins into the melt as well.
That is unfortunate.
Anyways, my cash flow is still good at this time. But I have to rethink how much Emergency reserve I will need for the next year to remain reasonably liquid without having to sell my PM or Crypto holdings. My usual Dollar cost average purchase will have to be on hold until after that new fridge comes in.
If you can, keep on Stacking friends.
Times are getting tough, have you resorted to selling any of your Crypto or precious metals to pay an unexpected expense?
Stacking Hive and Precious metals for that dark and stormy night!

That North Korean silver is interesting, I don't own any and have never come across any for that matter. It wouldn't surprise me if their wealthy "elites" were selling while abroad. It would be a cool piece to have in my collection though!
I'm glad things are going along well financially. You've had a rough year. How are you doing these days?
They're not the best of designs but fairly rare. Numista lists a different coin of the same series but rates it 100 in rarity. This Junk ship sister coin is not even listed in their data base. At this level of rarity and price point It may just turn out to be Sleeper coin later on. No guarantee.
On the personal front I remain on Medical leave. Dealing with other health issues. I get the feeling that I may be out of Commission for a little time somewhere down the line.
I’ve never stacked up any coin in my life
I wish to start doing so though
I love your Hive coin in particular☺️☺️☺️
No wonder. I looked up if either Nigeria or Lagos has any history of precious metals coinage. Not much except for a few commemorative issues back a while under Colonial days. At least having Crypto is a potential option by stacking the best cryptos. But if you have access to fertile land to grow food is the next best thing in my opinion. My small plot can only grow a limited variety of food in the warm part of the year.
I think Silversaver888 has a few left in stock if you are able to afford one. There is a link near the bottom of my post.
I always wanted to go to Hong Kong. Maybe we need an SGS meet-up for a big show?
That would be epic having one over in Hong Kong. These are huge shows I could lose myself in. I know a little bit of Cantonese so I could survive enough to meet up with my connection in person.

That pendant is truly a keeper.... The details, give it this rugged washed look.
Like something that has truly seen the ups amd downs of sea travel 😂🧳
That is why I put it first in the post, while the headliner Korean 250 Won coin is sort of, "Meh."
The back of the pendant is blank except for the 925 at the bottom.
Well, it may be uncomfortable for the wearer of there were engravings or protrusions at the back of a pendant
Must be a rare coin. It's hard to find any story about this commemorative. There is always some card accompanying this type of coin.

Sorry Kerris you know I’m not a fan of colorized coins…… you’ve done better…..🤣🤣🤣
When I titled this post I meant, 'Junk silver' in more than one meaning. We're talking about a country that isn't up to date 1980s technology in 1996. Nor do they have much events of their own to celebrate other than another country getting Hong Kong back from Great Britain. Yes, it may appear 'Cartoon-ish' but that could be the very point (poking a little fun at China) meme coin. 😄
It's why I introduced the warmup silver act before the headliner this time.
Fret not @silverd510, I got better silver coming.

Is nobody else going to comment on the play on words? "Junk silver?" With Chinese junks on them? sigh
Well, I got a laugh out of it, anyway. 😁 Thanks for sharing!

I did put out a few different shades of the term, 'Junk Silver' maybe it was too blatantly obvious as if were a trap waiting to be sprung.
I shall readjust my use of such form of humor for another day. I'm glad you picked it up.

New refrigerator thats important!😀
I like the sterling pendant, anything silver isn't really junk in my eyes Lol!!
Score!!!👍
It's looking like the 8 cubic ft Frigidaire from the Home Depot will get the nod. It's got a lot of satisfied buyers rating it above average and one of a few that could fit through my kitchen door. You would likely have a wider choice than I do this side of the border.

Pirate queen Ching Shih's fleet of Pirate Junks well outnumbered the Qing Emperor's navy. As to the quality of the crews, they varied much. But there are few that could match the skills and seamanship than those of the Silverton.

Very nice @kerrislravenhill! I like the silver charm as well and can see why you fell in love with it.
The national arms on the back of the coin is very attractive to me as well as the ships on the front. A nice find for sure.
I hope you got a fridge you like; sounds silly, but to me, it's really important that you like it. My last one before the one we purchased last year was absolutely NOT my favorite, but the one we did get last year is really awesome!
Take care and enjoy the rest of the week into the weekend. Too bad we didn't get a little more rain for the garden, but I know of someone (I'm sure you might know who I'm talking about) was just fit to be tied at 2 days of rain! He does dislike it so.

It's the same configuration as my old GE refrigerator and I will have to remove the door to get the old one out, as the new one coming in. Mind, I have to move things around the kitchen to squeeze everything through.
Thanks for the support Sis!
!LADY Pirate!
I understand! We literally had to cut the cord on the doors of the old one to get it out, but the new one has no handles sticking out, so that was easier. However, this one was bigger and we had to move it with 1/2" (a 1/4" on each side), to spare so it was excruciatingly slow and tedious, but we got it in! Take care sis! !LUV

Well, since I am new to this community, can you explain to me the difference between numismatic and stacking coins?
The Market Value of a numismatic coin is a function of Popularity + Rarity + Condition + Commodity value.
This DRPK 250 Won is not very popular worldwide, but it's low mintage of 5000 and this coin seldom seen showing up in the free market, and proof condition adds an NGC estimated value of $22 USD on top of the $13 Bullion value for a total of $35 USD.
Another numismatic example is my 1765 Colonial Mexico Carlos III 8 Reales is a hugely popular collectors coin. While it's commodity value is $20USD for the silver alone it came at an additional $430 for a total of $450USD. There are other factors like of pedigree, as it may be owned by a Historical figure or proved/verified as coming from a famous shipwreck.
I like to Theme collect, Ships and Pirates. collecting for the enjoyment and fun as a separate category apart from Stacking. The price above the bullion value I consider as a Fun Premium. I also collect a few Asian pieces that represent the Chinese part of my family tree and their journey and struggle to find a new life in North America. An heirloom I wish to leave for my descendants.
The Market value of a Bullion coin for Stacking is largely relies on it's Commodity Value
A typical Canadian Maple Leaf similar to this one. With millions made every year these are generally be valued at their current commodity value.
You will come by the term, semi-numismatic too. Bullion Coins that are made with a different theme design and a limited mintage. It makes Stacking more interesting and fun, and makes the mints a little more profit.
I better stop here before this becomes a Post on it's own.
Wow, thank you so much for your detailed explanation. I gained a lot of new knowledge from you. I am very grateful to meet and join the SGS community. Not only have I made many new friends, but I've also learned many new things.
It all boils down to, "What are our objectives?" ;
Is it to maximize saving your future buying power?
Is it a long termed savings account in case there is an emergency need?
Is it an asset that you want to pass down to your children so they can financially leverage themselves into a better lifestyle?
Or is it just for collecting fun and hobby?
Your plan could encompass all or some of these points.
I have seen the designs of this series for the first time, they are very special and beautiful, so I would definitely like to buy them.
This coin series would fit into specialized collecting in a numismatic sense. And not really suitable for maximizing wealth protection if you are Stacking with that objective in mind. North Korean silver is not as popular but is seldom seen outside a recluse North Korea.
