I'm of the mindset that graphics tend to affect a game's relevance years later rather than at release unless similar games released around the same time have considerably better graphics. In other words, I gravitate towards games with a "timeless" graphical aesthetic that can "look good" decades later.
For example, Golden Sun (2001) leaned into 3D effects for battles that aged horribly compared to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (2003). I adored both games, but I play FFTA once or twice a year compared to Golden Sun which I can only look upon nostalgically.
Similarly, Zelda Wind Waker aged much better (at least for me) than the games before/after it in the series: Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. So, while how a game plays tends to be more important when first trying again, it's visual aesthetic is often what hooks me for the long-term.
