I started playing a game from the most recent bundle I bought, and my god, it was rough.
The game was The Getaway, which - as far as I know - is considered to be a gritty London gangster version of GTA.
I'm not sure, but I think I recognised the voice of Danny Dyer in it, and if it wasn't him, it sounded like someone doing an impersonation. There are plenty of british gangster actors out there who I'm thinking may make an appearance.
The graphics are a bit rough, but that is to be expected.
I was playing some Battlefront 2, and that was also really rough. I have a feeling that it is the modern TVs, and I would love to try these games out on an old CRT screen, which I assume might look a bit better. Also, maybe a smaller screen in general, as the image wouldn't stretch so much.
I saw this screen about - and I'm not joking - 20-30 times during the first mission.
It was so frustrating.
The game has no health bar, and it also doesn't tell you anything. I found out by accident that you can heal by leaning against a wall.
I like the realistic feel of the game, and I'm sure it was done by design. But it got a bit frustrating.
Aiming was also tough, and all of this was trial and error without any hand holding from the game. Now, I'm all for being left to your own devices in games, but it was hard to get into it due to it.
The voice acting is good, and the story seems interesting.
I will stick this out and get further into it, but my first session was a bit of a learning experience.
All in all, it was a challenge, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end.
I noticed the graphics are rought with these "realistic" looking games. However, cartoon looking games seem to have held up so much better.
To test this, I played some Sly Raccoon and was shocked by the difference between the two of them.
I remember the Getaway. A reason why I don't play old nostalgic games anymore is because they rarely age well. I'd rather keep the memory of a good game instead of ruining it by hating it in modern times.
I find it so interesting to go back to some of the old classics, because there are certain games I played as a kid and thought they were the best games ever made - I suppose they were at the time. But, going back to experience them now is eye-opening.
The Getaway was one that I never played back then, and getting a chance actually to play it now has been cool. I'm going to keep going with it, even though it is clunky, it has grabbed me. Graphics were never a big deal to me anyway, I'm happy as long as the story/ characters are good.
