“Freedom Planet” is a platform video game developed by GalaxyTrail, which was initially released in 2014.

This title has been acclaimed for its retro style, reminiscent of the classics of the 90s, especially the “Sonic the Hedgehog” saga.

However, “Freedom Planet” stands out for its own identity, offering dynamic gameplay, charismatic characters and well-crafted level design.

The story of “Freedom Planet” takes place on the planet Avalice, where players take control of three heroines: Lilac, Carol and Milla.

Each of these characters has unique abilities that add variety to the gameplay. Lilac, a water dragon, can perform a spinning attack and glide through the air; Carol, a cat, is agile and can ride a motorcycle; and Milla, a dog, has the ability to create blocks and use magical powers.

This diversity allows players to approach levels in different ways, which adds an element of strategy and exploration.

The level design in “Freedom Planet” is one of its strengths. Each world is filled with platforms, enemies and secrets, inviting players to explore and discover alternate routes.

Speed is a key component of the game, and players must master fast movement and jumping mechanics to overcome the challenging obstacles presented.

Visually, “Freedom Planet” features a vibrant and colorful art style, with 2D graphics that evoke nostalgia. The animation is fluid and detailed, adding to the overall gameplay experience.

The soundtrack, composed by the talented video game musician, adds an extra touch of energy and excitement to each level, perfectly complementing the on-screen action.

In addition to its gameplay and aesthetics, “Freedom Planet” has also been praised for its narrative. The story tackles themes of friendship, bravery and the fight against evil, adding depth to the experience.

As players progress, they encounter endearing characters and memorable villains, making the plot engaging and immersive.

It was initially released for the Windows platform and later for Wii U in 2015, for PlayStation 4 in 2017 and for Nintendo Switch in 2018.

A sequel, Freedom Planet 2, was released in 2022 for Windows. Versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S arrived in April 2024.

Freedom Planet is one of those games that makes you have fun after a tiring day at work. It's a pretty good game despite its pixel-like graphics, but the good thing is that its main characters are well defined and very cartoonish. I don't know how well it's aging but at the time it was pretty good.
