Bloody kids... and empty vistas to fill!

Bloody kids... and empty vistas to fill!.jpg

We've now had the arborist complete the deadwooding, and the takedown a couple of large trees and two large wattles. And with the disappearance of that high and medium level cover, we are suddenly quite exposed on that particular side of our block... and the sun is just streaming straight in in the morning! Good... but I also like to sleep! Plus, we have a lost a bit of privacy as there are now clear and open sight lines to the road!

We knew that it was going to be a bit like this, but it is one thing to think it... and quite another to experience it! So, we are going to have to start planting some replacement cover so that we regain a bit more privacy!

One on neighbour side, we took down a largeish Nicolai gum tree... it was pretty old and gnarled... but more importantly, it is known for dropping large branches and it isn't a protected tree species either... and given that it was overhanging the neighbour's car parking area... well, we weren't really that keen to have it just hanging there! So, we talked with them... and they were also happy to get rid of it! So... down it came! But we will have to figure out a way to plug this new large gap! Perhaps that little plant will grow up and start to be a big shrub? I will have to start trimming it a bit to try and make it bush out a bit... but there is still a few metres behind it and the wood screen that we will probbly want to fill!

On one corner... we've lost a huge wattle that sprayed its long limbs everywhere... and with it, we lost all the shade and cover that came from the large and leafy plant. It does make this area now look really quite stark... and it means our corner bedroom is now bathed in light! On the plus side, the overshadowed garden beds are now getting some decent light as well! And this entire area is now ripe for some lower level shrub cover that will help hold the soil as well. Or perhaps even just some scattered low level garden beds or flower beds.

And on this side, we had a HUGE gum tree that was leaning quite heavily over the road. The removal of that tree and another limb from a different tree that was overhanging our driveway means that we now have a view straight into open sky! Again... it lets all the light stream in, and now the lower level plants and garden beds are now getting some decent light! But it is very open... and we will need to plant some shrubs to help regain a bit of privacy. We do have some interesting native plant ideas that will fit the bill!

... sigh... and kids will be kids... and despite having a playground and being told many times to not swing from the Hills hoist... well, they did... and it has popped out of the ground. Not broken at least... but definitely needing a reseating when we have time! GRRRRRRRR....

it seems like the tree was very useful before it was cut down. like a love hate relationship.

Yeah, it was doing a great job of shading the house... and I guess having three large ones being felled in one go really makes the difference really much more stark!

Lots of felling going on....

I remember when a tree in my yard was cut down, the change of the environment was so stark.

It's like the land had a haircut...

Oohhh... this feels less like a haircut and more like a shave!

A lot of people don't like them, but I would look into these:

I am thinking about putting some up behind our house. The key is they grow fast and fill in quickly. It's sad about those gum trees as they are great for shade, but I have head the same thing about the branches falling and causing damage.

Hmmm... I will look at those and see if there are some Australian equivalents?

There might be. I think there are a ton of different varieties. For me the important thing is that they grow fast and that they stay green through the winter. That's when the leaves fall off the trees and you can really see the other house through the woods.
