A little over 2 weeks ago, I planted several plants into the soil and now I'm tracking their progress. Now its time for part 3 of the progress.
You can find Part 1here and Part 2 here.
Spring onions have grown quite large during this time and soon they are ready for eating, not sure how much more these will grow in height. Let's hope it will grow in height and get wider a bit more.
Frankly, I am quite worried about the sunflowers. They have been growing higher but it's obvious that one of them cant hold its own weight. The problem is, that I don't know what am I doing wrong. My theory is that maybe I water them too much, which makes em grow fast but unfortunately so fast that the stem does not get wider fast enough, resulting in being unable to support its weight.
In the photo below you can see that one of the sunflowers is basically on the ground. They are in the upper row.
Two of the sunflowers have started growing but the third one still hasn't come out, by now I think it is a failed seed.
In the lower row, there are Californiavalmue flowers, one of them is quite tilted as well, I hope it will straighten up. They haven't gotten longer in the past 3 or 4 days tho.
Finally, there is a red coneflower that is still very small. It does grow quite slowly for some reason.
If you might know what's going on with my sunflowers or any suggestions at all then please let me know. This is not the first time, two years ago the same thing happened and the sunflowers failed, now it seems to happen again...
So strange not seeing your beautiful landscape photography @greddyforce! But what a wonderful contribution for the #hivegarden community. Did you try soaking your seeds overnight and then planting? I find that works best
Yeah, posting some other stuff too sometimes 😁.
No I didn't soak them before planting, I made the soil very wet tho.
From my perspective, the problems comes from the depth of soil and plastic tray. I do not know how much nutrients did you add in soil, but seem like it is not a main problem. I think you can buy seed in another store then sowing again in the different tray to check the quanlity of seed.
Spring onion is so great, I think this is time for you to harvest and let another one come out again for the next harvest. :D
Thank for sharing @greddyforce .
I bought the soil from a store and it is for planting seeds so I think it already has all the necessary nutrients.
Last year I used a different seed but sunflower turned out the same. Maybe sunflower only wants to grow outdoors. My plan is to replant them outside when nights are warm enough.
Good luck for the next time, @greddyforce and keep letting us know the result. I also want to learn as well as know the reason to cause that issue. Thank you!
Thanks! I will be making another update post sometime in the coming weeks.
Maybe @tuocchu is rigth about the depth of the tray, and in my opinion it is the amount of sun it gets. remember sunflower need full sun, the more the better haha. Maybe the next time they'll come out stronger! but consider this advice!
What about if we can grew it directly on the ground instead of seedling in the tray. Because sunflower is a big tree, its root system of course needs a large and deep space to develope the root. What do ypu think @fanyokami?
Yes! it can totally be grown directly in the soil!! just loose the ground a little bit and put the seed about 2.5 cm depth and cover with soil! I think it'll definitely do better that way!!
