Annual garden - August update

in HiveGarden6 months ago

Lots of plants that were not doing much earlier this season are now really waking up and putting out lots of growth. The horsegram aka lablab vine has completely taken off since my July update. The tomatillo and pepper plants are also budding and putting out fruits now. So lots of activity going on here in the garden.

The horsegram vine has grown a lot with vines spreading up the trellis. It is starting to crowd out the pepper plants found at the base so we need to trim it once it awhile to make sure we keep it growing where we want.

The lettuce plants have completely bolted so we are just leaving them be. We may collect the seeds, since this bed needs more dirt added we plan on redoing the soil next year.

Lots of salads have been made this year, though we plan on growing them differently next year. Using wood chips around the plants on top of the dirt so mud does not splash up on the leaves. Hopefully that will make cleaning them much easier.

The tomato plants have mostly let us down, the fruit they are producing is going bad. We think it may be related to a calcium and magnesium deficiency. Using a liquid fertilizer we hope to bring them back into good shape but it takes time to see changes in them.

Melon aphids were affecting our cantaloupes but we treated the undersides of the leaves with insecticidal soap and seems they are now bouncing back and putting out new flowers. Our other bed has fruits growing, though they are quite small at the moment.

I love beans, so growing this vine is something I am really looking forward to harvesting. Right now its all vegetative growth, but I am hoping to see flowers soon and then bean pods.

The dense canopy of these vines are promising.

Funny, when we planted them in early spring they did nothing.. just started turning yellow, and then one day they just woke up and starting quickly growing.

Another late starter are the pepper plants. They have been in the ground for months and are just now forming flowers.

Even the trinidad scorpion peppers are flowering.. oh man soo much pain is on the way.. lol a spicy good pain.

Funny how few insects tried to feed on the leaves. We would notice little spots where a bug started eating it and then said no thanks and left..lol

Many tomaillos are on the way as well, waiting for their husk to crack open so its not time yet.

That sprawling plant is one of the tomaillo plants.. Amazing it was once just a little seedling.

With many peppers on the way and the tomaillos ripening I should have lots of tasty salsa to make.

We forgot to label what is what, so I guess a taste test is how I will need to figure them out.. lol this could be painful.

Loving how big they are getting.

The gold and red potatoes have not done very good.. Not much growth top side. I think the spuds I used to start them were kind of old.. need to look for more green potato spuds next year.

Its hard to say exactly they are not doing so well but I think its related to what I mentioned above being old spuds.

The brussel sprouts plants have done nothing for months, though I think when it gets cold I may see them do something.

Many more tomatoes on the way, just hope they form right with the liquid fertilizers we have been giving them.

We ran out of tomato cages, so hopefully these guys will be okay. They are so small right now so its hard to say if they will even need supports by end of year.

Lots of fruit but 90% of them are rotten on the plant, that end rot has been a big problem for us this year.

Even the cherry tomatoes are showing signs of being upset and not producing good fruit. Hoping the cal-mag helps eventually.

We just hope one day the fruits will form right as we keep giving them the fertilizers they need to help stop end rot.

The sweet potato plants I have had no doubts about, they always do great and need very little help. And of course they are thriving... lol

We got two beds of these, so we should get lots of spuds :-)

Since we did not fill up all the beds this year, some areas a little more overgrown than others.

But in general we used most of the beds and plan on using even more next year with lots of beans.. since they seem to do so well.

The chicken and duck enclosure is mostly done, but since nothing is going on in there right now we have just yet the weeds take over.

Speaking of weed, I am unsure of the fate of these four cannabis plants. Two of them are showing signs of fungal infection. We may kill them, or just let them die off on their own.. not sure yet. Hard decisions to make.

Next year I may grow in pots outdoors, seems this is a soil bourne problem. Even though I used good garden soil I guess it spread through the native dirt or something like that.

Really hope I can salvage some of it, not all the buds look bad.

So lots going on, some good.. some bad and some great.. But compared to last year, we are making great progress on the garden. And we hope to learn from the mistakes we make this year and apply some new ideas next year to hopefully resolve issues that come up.

Oh my so much going on!

Tomatoes are such a touchy thing. They take so long to fruit and dont complain until it is too late. This year, I was diligent about pruning bottom and superfluous branches off for more airflow and it seems to be working. Liquid soluble fertalizer every couple weeks and this one is about to turn red.

Man i have jalapeno envy too. Last year they grew huge and plentiful and this i have only harvested 1 so far.

You may have inspired me to craft a garden update of my own this week!

They sure do seem to want special conditions, well good you got yours under control. I should try pruning off the dead leaves, probably would help. And we are using something called cal-mag for them. So hopefully that helps.

Luckily our peppers are doing great, I think they are jalapenos. Wish I labeled them better.

Hah nice, best of luck with the post.

Haha that is my annual conundrum! I plant them and then eventually forget which is which! This year we have a half dozen varieties of tomato and it is like a guessing game to see which is beefsteak. brandywine or even roma!

Can you please tell me why you have a ring round the tomato plant?

To support the fruit

Yep like dave said it helps the tomato plants from touching the ground.

I ran out of them.. need to buy more lol

Good evening my brother ♥️♥️

You share a lot of pictures of your plants, but what concerns me is your tomatoes, rotten tomatoes are a big problem for you, but I hope you find a solution soon.

And there are many more plants that I like, such as chilies, they grow slowly but I also have a slightly larger chili garden in my village🤗🤗

I do hope I can correct the tomato fruit problem, we shall see.

Oh nice, yeah ours are a bit behind. Next year we plan on starting the seeds in bigger trays.

And I hope the results are satisfactory, my brother ♥️

I think, you will have abundant harvest this year.😊😊

Ah I hope so... thanks

You're welcome. 😊 Hoping.😊

Still my favorite marijuana plant, hopefully this marijuana plant grows lush, and quickly recovers from fungal attacks, and all your other plants look lush all my brothers @solominer 👏🤗

Ah nice, I really like the cannabis plants too.. so I hope for the best with them.

thanks

That sucks about your lettuce. To be fair, it feels like you had a lot of irons in the fire this year, so maybe next year you will be able to get it sorted out a bit more. The tomatoes look decent. My peppers were always a bit late too when I used to do them. Those jalapenos look good though!

Ah its okay we got many tasty bowls from them.

Yep always next year to dial them in a little more.

I am looking forward to the peppers quite a bit.

Good luck on those buds!

thanks! I need it.. lol

I'm sorry that not everything turned out as expected in the garden, there are many things to see and analyze for next year at the time of planting

I'm sorry that the lettuce plants have bolted, the good thing is that you have seeds for the next planting. What a shame to see so many tomatoes in poor condition

I hope that next year when planting the cannabis plants in pots I don't have problems with the fungus, dear friend @solominer

Ah yeah true, we will learn and adapt for next year.

Its okay about the lettuce, we had lots of bowls of greens from them.. so just like the peas its time for them to stop producing I think.

Me too.. hopefully next year that will help.

good evening and greetings, the atmosphere in your place looks very cool, and this plant also looks very fertile👍

Hey there, thanks.. it is all coming together quite nicely.

There are many kinds of crops in your garden, I also like to farm, but I see that there are many types of farms in your field, it is very good, so there is no need to bother going to the market to buy vegetables 😄😄

Btw I also really hope that this cannabis plant does not all fail, I noticed in the wrong picture there is one of the shoots starting to grow normally, hopefully you can save it my brother.

Yep we have quite the variety, glad you spotted some that we share.

Me too, I really hope it pulls through. This is my first outdoor grow for cannabis so I want it to be successful.

Of course, I really pray that this cannabis plant will soon be well coordinated, wow... Your first experience of growing cannabis outdoors is already quite good, of course as this first experience you will get better in the next stage, I hope you try it again next time my friend.

I’m still learning about gardening, but it’s inspiring to see how you're figuring things out and making progress, even with some challenges.

Oh nice, well gardening is a process of learning over the years. So no worries about messing up, we can always improve next year.

I know you have to grow in the summer because your winters are colder than Florida, but I think your summers are becoming hotter like ours, making growing things like tomatoes very difficult. Brussels sprouts love the cold they will do better in cooler temps, I am not sure if you can grow them all winter but I would try it if I were you. Even in all the heat, your garden looks amazing.

Yep, we can only grow here around march and november. Otherwise frosts may kill off some plants. We need to figure out which ones can handle a little frost so we can grow some off season.

Hopefully the brussels sprouts plants wake up once it cools off around here.

Thanks, its been a lot of work watering everything during the droughts. We had a month were we got zero rain and that was pretty rough.

Wow, you have plenty of veggies in your garden 😍

Hah yep we sure do

Lacewings will cure the aphid problem..

Oh good to know, but we already treated the plants with insecticidal soap and seems to have addressed the issue mostly. Its hard spraying under the leaves. So if it stops working we may move onto lacewings.

Using wood chips around the plants on top of the dirt so mud does not splash up on the leaves

Now that’s an excellent idea, it makes so much sense friend.

Yeah hopefully that helps out with that issue.

Weed! Wow!
I can't plant vegetables right now. I will start in September or October.

Hah yeah, wish it was happier but glad to have it regardless.

Oh okay, best of luck with planting soon.

It’s funny that even bugs are not risking their luck with those Trinidad scorpion peppers 🌶 🥵 🔥 😂

Hah it is, a sign they should be spicy I think.
