Overwintering Sucess: Nurturing My Tomato Seedlings & Grapevine Indoors

A couple of outdoor plants that I kept indoors during the winter—because they would surely die otherwise—are my tomato seedlings and my grapevine.

The tomatoes 🍅
I planted these tomatoes in autumn, hoping to propagate them since they are an heirloom variety.

The fruits were not only very tasty but also looked beautiful. heirloom tomato seedlings

I kept a couple of them indoors; the rest died during frost.

Knowing how large tomatoes can grow, I intentionally stunted them by keeping them in a small container while ensuring they received water and nutrients from time to time.

They needed transplanting, looking a little weak and rootbound.

Today, I transplanted them into a bigger pot with fresh soil, to prepare them for the outdoors once the weather warms up—which will be soon.

They are a little weak and unable to stand on their own.

I cut a couple of twigs from the garden to stabilise them in the pot.

I placed the twigs beside the tomato and gently tied the tomato stems to the support. Plastic bags cut into strips make excellent ties, as they are soft and don’t damage the stems.

Now the tomatoes are happier and ready to bloom and bear fruit anytime soon!

But I will keep them indoors for a couple more weeks or until the weather becomes consistently warm.

Then, the Grapevine 🍇

I was lucky to bring this one indoors in time., and after a frozen night I thought it was dead—there were no signs of life.outside, It had been sitting in the corner of the lounge but a few days ago, new leaves started to sprout, and tiny vines began forming and now getting longer.

Since the vines were growing everywhere, I needed to contain them until they could go outside.

It is bearing lots of leaves.

It is also blooming and soon the grape fruits will be heavier.

I grabbed a few canes from the garden, stabbed them into the soil around the pot.

and used green twine to wrap around each cane, creating a support cage for the vines.

I contained them inside the cage.

Now, the grapevine looks much happier.

This is ready to go outside, or it will occupy the whole place.

One stem snapped during the process, but I took it as a little treat after my work—grape leaves are packed with antioxidants and taste great at this stage!

I feel great knowing these two plants have thrived indoors, and I can’t wait to see them flourish outside… soon.

Have a nice day, everyone!

I am not so kind to vines. My poor grape vines have spent the winter freezing their asses off in the dome. We've had a bit of sunshine for the last week or so and they're beginning to perk up and look less miserable.

Your dome is amazing, it keeps your grape vines alive! Yes it has also been sunny for a few hours the last couple of days, It makes a lot of difference. 🩷😊

Such an amazing and creative work you've done for your plants. 🥰

Those tomatoes look great and I'm glad you were able to make them feel happier hehe sometimes you have to take certain necessary measures to protect the crops from extreme weather 🙏

I love the amazing work you did here. You make sure it has water and nutrients all the time

Sending you Ecency votes!

Thank you, much appreciated. 🩷😊

Love your grapevine. My little potted fig tree is deciduous too and all the leaves fall off in the house. Then it gets lovely new ones in the spring.
Wish I had enough sun for tomatoes!

wow that is so amazing, I hope I could grow this kind of tomato here in the Philippines.

The Philippines has got the best weather for tomatoes, I am.pretty sure this will grow there.

Last year I visited my parents and planted few tomato seedlings in the garden. After a few weeks they sent me photos of the tomato fruits they were harvesting from what I have planted. I miss the Philippine weather, you can plant anything.
