There is no day that I don't dream of our future herb garden, there is no way that I see someone and I don't mention something about it and I think that I have mentioned it here already a couple of times!
Well, the field does exist and we do work on it. But what I don't usually mention is that it is an absolutely crazy project...
Due to a really steep incline and the earthmoving that has been done by previous owners, all the superficial soil has been washed out leaving the poor field more like a lunar landscape with some olive trees popping up, not in their best shape...
@fotostef is working on it for four months now and he has done most of the work, but I did my best, too! Although I am not the strongest muscular girl I've met, I managed to help.
Everyone is doing their best!
Although it's pretty obvious who is the real boss here...
90% of the work has been done by the pickax, the mattock, the rake and the shovel.
I hope you understand now why I haven't written a word these days... The pain is all over my body, haha :)
@fotostef on the other hand is doing pretty fine!!!
The whole design was made by Stefanos after a lot of discussions. I had another plan in mind, a bit more simple, but Stefanos came up with this gorgeous brave design and since he had the guts, the muscles and the mood to do it the hard way, I said yes. And I am so glad! Even though it was difficult and a very slow procedure, the result is the best I can imagine of.
Big rocks had to be removed.
Raising beds were made in order to avoid further landslides.
All plants that were previously at the field (mostly prickly ones) and pruned branches of the trees were chopped and buried in the beds.
In less than 10 days a few thousands baby herbs are coming and we have to be ready! Does it seem as if we are ready? I wish the days were longer!!!
PS 1. I realized that taking photos made me feel less guilty for my long breaks :)))
PS 2. I hope that the next post will have more plant life in it!
What an incredible project. I can't imagine gardening with all those rocks. I hope you are ready when the plants arrive...
We hope so, too :)
To be honest, there is no alternative, when the plants arrive, we will welcome them the best way we can!
As for the rocks, I was so surprised by the wild terrain when we first moved here! Now I am so used to it :))
Thank you so much for your support!!!
Oh wow - that's some hard work right there! And that view of the ocean in the background - amazing! Looks like backbreaking work but it'll be lovely when it's all done!
I'm a bit late getting round to all the #gardenjournal posts - the winning post will be out in the next day or so! Sorry for the delay - been busy in the garden myself!
So excited to see how your garden grows! What herbs are you planting?
It's this view that gives me so much strength, I like to dream of all the colors of the future blooming herbs and the sea in the background! Sometimes I fall asleep with this thought :)
We are planting local herbs: dittany, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lemon grass, sage, thyme, rockrose, helichrysus, rose hips ;)
I would also love to have some trees apart from existing olive trees and carob trees, maybe a couple of linden trees and a laurel tree... Any suggestions are more than welcome!!!
Thank you so much for your beautiful message!
Sounds gorgeous. I would love a linden. You.should try ashwagandha.. it grows in dry soil in India and I found it has done well. It's such a good adaptogen. Not local of course!!! I will definitely come visit if we ever get to Greece!
Ashwagandha is an interesting idea!
First step is to work with local plants and next step is to experiment as much as we can and have fun :)
You are more than welcome anytime!!!
Wishing you good fortune and all that leads to it.
The place looks awesome. It reminds me of the Canary Islands a bit and of another thing as well. In a book by Stephen King there was a description of a farmland plot the owners had named Son Of A Bitch. I guess there will be lots of tough negotiations but herbs might be the native thing that fits there.
Son Of A Bitch, really??? I couldn't stop laughing when I saw it!I love it!
Although I think I need a sweet name, you know to flatter it, to try to soften it up and see how and if we can work together:))
But truth is that Son Of A Bitch is so suitable right now that I can't get it out of my mind, haha!
Thank you @manoldonchev!
Yup, true story, it was in Wolves of the Calla, book 5 of The Dark Tower saga.
Fantastic!!!
i think that i said this to @fotostef some time ago, looking at this i realize that i am taking for granted this boring flat peace of land i live at, when you get rid of grass and stick seeds in it and it grows :)
Hahaha! You must be crazy to live in such an abnormal place, it sounds really weird :) The funny thing is that we chose this place to move in when we decided that we want to become farmers, ignorance and supreme optimism were the key words of our situation!!!
at least you don't have strong north wind and snow at the moment :D
That's true! On the contrary, yesterday we had south wind and quite summery temperature! We can't have it all :)
That looks like a ton of work!
I like the way the beds came out, and using the rocks in the spaces between the beds is a really good idea.
Thank you @amberyooper! The solution with the rocks worked out well! The only thing is to persuade the dog that we walk on the narrow rocky paths and not on the wide paw-friendly beds :)
Yeah, I can see how that might be a problem once you have the plants in the beds...
I am not sure yet how he will react, for now he seems absolutely confused! Maybe he will understand when he sees the plants, maybe not, haha! I will have to keep an eye on him in the beginning for sure!
