Tet is the celebration of the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. It is considered by the population, who don't participate in religious holidays, to be the most important holiday of the year. For 7-10 days almost everything is closed and this includes a vast majority of normal services including police and city management.
The real benefit of this prolonged time off work is the fact that the roads have about 1/5 as many cars on them and the noise levels, even if just for short time, are kept very low. For these 10 days the amount of beeping of horns that I hear from my balcony are reduces by 9/10 and I will always be a fan of that.
There are also some wonderful displays that the city puts up on various properties around the city.
The love their flower arrangements here and there is no reason for them not to. This is wonderful and I just hope that the flowers were planted there, not just places there. So if someone comes by and maintains this it can remain in place for a month or so and that will be very welcome since it does beautify the area. I had to stand there for quite a while just to get a shot of it because of all the people taking group photos in front of it. There was more than one display as well.
This was the perfect place for them to put these things because it is across the street from the beach and in the giant footpath of a now closed hotel that just looks an eyesore for the most part. There is a lot of foot traffic here and now we have something for the people to actually admire on their way past it to the area where they will be relentlessly harassed by foot massage shops for the next two blocks.
I don't know who set this up or when they did so, but I would presume they are city workers who didn't get the time off. Perhaps the city has incentives of additional wages for their workers the same way that bars and restaurants do the same thing to entice staff members to turn up during a public holiday.
There are some downsides to everyone having the week off though and it is perfectly exhibited in this next picture.
This is just a block away from the floral arrangements and sadly, nobody is going to come by to pick this up for at least an additional 2 days. This is basically everywhere as well and if you've ever caught a whiff of some dumpster in the distance, that is basically what the entire city smells like. I guess this is just part of what is going to happen when nearly everyone has time off.
I am willing to deal with it because I live in a high rise and am well beyond the street stink.
Tet is something that you have to prepare for if you live here since almost everything is going to be shut or charging significantly more for their services if they are open. I managed pretty well this year and only missed out on a few things that I forgot to stockpile. Live and learn and make the correct choice next year I guess!
Wow so nice the flower arrangement design . Its so good that the government give 7-10 days off to relaxeed and spent time with the family celebrating the Chinese new year.
That garbage is not good to throw it anywhere specially blocked the floral arrangements. It should put in a right place . Yeah so true if day have off on work they didn't pick it up .The people will not throw garbage if they know that no one could pick it up. They should wait the
off last and they are back to work to do their jobs.
I really agree that everything has its advantages and disadvantages. The flower arrangement is beautiful, but on the other hand, the trash is piled up. It's a good thing you couldn't smell it because you were above it. But what about the people living near that smelly trash?
There's nothing else they can really do. There are a million people here and people produce garbage. That pile I took the photo of is near 3 hotels so imagine you paid extra for holiday-rate hotel rooms and that's what you see when you walk outside every day.
It's so frustrating. Waste management is a problem in many countries, including the Philippines it was because of rapid population growth. It's hard to find a solution, we can only hope for a better way to solve this.
They certainly take this holiday seriously ad I guess you have to be prepared knowing most things shut down. I was impressed here as our rubbish was collected the day after Christmas.
if I was in a by the hour position for my job and working on the the holidays was to pay something like 3 times as much I would be the first one to volunteer. Some woman I know owns 7 restaurants and she pays 3x as much and some of the staff have to be told, no, you have to take the time off. As a result all of her restaurants are busy as heck the entire week.
Yes I can imagine this would be a proper boom period for any restaurant that stays open.
I love the flower arrangement, its so nice, very creative but the pile of trash was a disturbance, hopefully it will be collected very soon.

It's nice to put the flowers , but there's too much trash on the sides . Maybe It's because they're busy and don't have time to get all the trash out there.
that's exactly what it is. The trash pickup service is going to be VERY busy when they start work again on monday.
There is already a lot of garbage , the environment there will smell if someone even buys something there.
Oh! kinda sad to see the trash piling up the roadside. The hope the waste management services continue even during public holidays.😊
they do continue but with far fewer people working. I guess they are doing the best they can. I try to not complain so much but it really becomes a mess and it gets a lot worse if some hungry dogs decide to rip apart the bags too
Oh! maybe lack of personnel, atleast they tried their best😊That's the problem when the dog will litter all those trash.😞
