We normally have the entire bowling alley reserved for us on Thursdays. There has been only one mishap where they didn't remember to do this for us. We were a bit disappointed on this past week when it was a public holiday and the kids were not in school. Many people in the public sector also had the day off so this meant that we actually had greater numbers than we normally would have because all the teachers had the day off.
I had hoped that the bowling alley would still reserve the lanes for us and they did, kind of. However, they only reserved half of all the lanes for us and this was kind of irritating and resulted in us needing to crowd the lanes with 4 people on one lane and then 3 people on a championship lane that we normally will only ever had 2 people on.
This was irritating as hell to me because we have been a very dedicated group and have been there without fail on every single Thursday for over 3 years.
I was really pleased that not too many extra turned up in our ranks because I was already being a little bit bitchy because not only did we not have enough space but people were also turning up late, which is a great way to really get under my skin.
By the time we finally got rolling both figuratively and literally, we had 24 people on 7 lanes and this is much more crowded than I like it to be. In the end, 2 people were turned away because they arrived late and well, that's what you get. We are all adults and I don't feel as though I am asking too much for people to manage to be somewhere by 11am. I'm the one doing all the registration anyway, all they have to do is get their ass to the bowling alley.
We made it work and thankfully another lane opened up just as we were starting and therefore we only had to put 4 people on one of the lanes. I kind of "punished" the people that turned up at the last minute because we kind of need to have a first come, first served system here.
The scores were pretty good considering how loud it was and how many extra people attended with almost everyone in attendance getting over 100 points per game. For someone that doesn't bowl all the time this is not an accomplishment but we are an older group and very few of us have much experience in the sport. I managed to get the second highest score out of anyone with a 157. So I was happy with that.
Thankfully the oil patters were done correctly so I didn't have to complain about that.
At the after-party I once again reminded people to please be there before 1045 and reminded they that I am the one that does all the registration and extra work so it is very inconsiderate of them to not simply turn up on time.
Then of course afterwards we headed to the afterparty and everyone got pretty drunk. Let's just say that Friday didn't feel very good for me :)
If you are in Da Nang and want to come meet the DUMBO crew feel free to join as all are welcome. Nobody cares if you are good at it or not. Just make sure you are there before 11 or you are just going to irritate me with your presence.
In some ways you also cannot blame the bowling alley because it was a public holiday and even though you booked out the place every Thursday for the last 3 years they must have been in a bind. Not wanting to piss you guys off or the public there is always going to be disappointment and no real winner.
Ultimately, their objective is to make money and these holidays are a big day for that. I guess I was just happy that they saved half of the lanes for us and had all the people who are not part of our crew on one side of it. I think they did their best.
Yes it sounds like they made it work and tried to keep everyone happy.
How was it for the people who had bowlers on the lane next to them? Did they seem to follow the etiquette well or was it just a free for all like you would expect. I guess the good thing is that holiday only comes once a year right? Maybe next year it won't fall on a Thursday?
We only had one flank exposed and I intentionally put are lessor experienced bowlers over there. I didn't hear any complaints from them so I guess it was ok.
I think the holiday is date based, not day of the week based so yes, Next year it will be on a different day of the week.
Well that's good news!
That's a busy place. We had 3 bowling alleys here in Chiang Mai about 5 years ago... now we have none. The last one shut about a year ago. I went there once in the last months of their operation and it was really clear they no longer had any interest in taking care of the place.
I lived in Chiang Mai and believe the last lane standing was called "Bully Bowl". This was 5 years ago and even then it was already in terrible shape. I don't know what happened to make bowling so unpopular that it went from 3 lanes to zero in a relatively short amount of time.
Recently, I had a chance to move back to Chiang Mai but I will admit the absence of a bowling alley was a factor in me deciding just to stay here.
I was either bully bowl or buddy bowl. I don't recall. I dont' think it was entirely the fault of the bowling alley itself that it went under. It was in one of the more outdated shopping malls that had fallen out of fashion because Chiang Mai has too many shopping malls.
if i remember correctly it was just down the street from the immensely popular Maya shopping mall so it never really had a chance.
Bowling was indeed an enjoyable activity together with your family and friends. But looking at this crowd with so many people seems irritating to wait sometimes, but at least you enjoyed it. 😊
I am not a big fan of waiting but I already told the crew that we go on Thursdays no matter what. The only thing that can stop us is if for some reason they are not open.
This is why I rarely leave the house on weekends or public holidays😆
I love bowling, makes me hapy when I knockdown all the bowling pins🤗 have a good day ahead @gooddream
