A Little Road Trip From Phuket to Bangkok

I haven't posted here at C/ASEAN recently because I have been posting over at C/Architecture+Design. I have mostly been posting about work but I think for today I will recap on a recent road trip I did with my BF. I took a few days off work and we drove up the coast to Ranong then north to Prachuap Kirikhan, then Bangkok. I flew back to Phuket and my BF went motorcycle shopping. He didnt buy anything though but can back with a new bicycle instead haha. We took many nice photos along the way but I want to start with this so lovely photo of my niece at Layan Beach on Phuket Island. This is my favourite beach in Phuket and often there is a baby elephant there to pose with tourists at sunset. We kind of started our holiday here even though it's close to home. Sunset drinks with my brother and his kids.

Ranong is 300km north of Phuket and is on the Burma border. Its kind of a cool town with not much for tourists but I like it because its very authentic. They still have these cool motorcycle tuktuks which are less and less around Thailand.

From there we drove straight up to Prachuap Kirikhan. This is the province south of Bangkok on the west coast that is best known for Hua Hin the tourist resort where our royal family often spend time. We have a friend there that owns a wildlife refuge. He rescues wild animals from the pet and tourism trade and gives them a beautiful home. We stayed one night there. I couldn't believe just how many rescued animals he had there but my favourite were the elephants. He has built a small lodge on the grounds to help generate funds for the refuge and we were happy to stay there looking out over the elephant enclosure.

After that we went to Bangkok. My BF wanted to look at some old cars that he knows one guy was selling from his home in Bangkok and then another guy that had an old motorcycle for sale. I don't know why he is so obsessed with old cars and bikes LOL. But anyway i have to admit the cars were cool but just too expensive - I loved the VW bug but my BF liked the Mercedes of course.

The motorcycle was very special but sadly it doesn't have any paperwork so impossible to register and insure which means you have to be very careful driving it on the road - the police will take it off you if they catch you.

Dinner and drinks that night on the roof top of a pretty nice hotel right in the downtown. I'm always torn in Bangkok between enjoying these glamorous bars and restaurants high up on the rooftops of expensive hotels or getting delicious street food and street drinks with all the hustle and bustle of Bangkok at road level.

So That was my little 4 day break from work. But now it's back to work. My brother has been working hard on this villa renovation and I think next post will be back at the C/Architecture+Design with a story of how that project is progressing. Hope to see some of you over there! thanks for reading and may everyone have a lovely weekend!

Looks like a very fun trip. I was somewhere not long ago where the hotel had a baby elephant that would interact with the guests. It was a major attraction for the hotel but is that even legal? I'm not judging you, I'm just curious.

Hi @gabe.radke. Ok so there are a few things to consider about the whole elephant tourism thing. Legality aside it's more about ethical individual choices. Doing anything to support the animal tourism industry for elephants is wrong in my opinion as the breaking of baby elephants for domestication is barbaric. That baby elephant would have been thru the process for sure. Visiting a refuge where rescued elephants live peacefully at their own leisure is the best. But of course what can I say to my 8 year old niece when she sees other kids playing on the beach with that elephant...:(

Great to see you posting back here at ASEAN. What a great trip! May I ask the name of the place you mentioned that is a wildlife refuge. I would love to visit next time I'm in that area.

It's called the WFFT and for sure you can find on Google. The lodge they built is also on the normal hotel booking websites too. I really can recommend it. Enjoy there!

Hey... A wonderful escape . Just right and needed after so much work. I love to travel by road and enjoy the scenery.

That wolkswagen is beautiful I'm just looking for one to buy hahaha.... I also have this obsession with old cars. I love everything that has history and without a doubt those vintage cars have it.

Yes my BF is bugging me always to buy a vintage car - he says it will be more stylish. I do love them but Im scared to drive old car a bit. Also I cant drive the car with gears - I have to learn! Thanks so much for your lovely comment!

That motorbike is super-sweet. I want it. I bet it is expensive though! Any idea why it isn't street legal?

The old bikes in Thailand often do not have a green book as they were imported before that kind of paperwork started. And then there was a grace period where the Thai government allowed all these old bike owners to apply for the new kind of registration. Many people never did it and so now we have so many old bikes in Thailand that can never be registered (like that one in the photo) And while it's ok to have as a collector piece it's not safe to ride it because no insurance or registration and the corrupt Thai police will just take it and keep it! :(

well i am sure there are ways around that. I once had a bike with a side car tht wasn't street legal anywhere in the country. Didn't stop me from having / driving it though.

It was a cheap bike though so it is probably a very different story. Do you have a lot of bikes?

My BF has 3 bikes. I dont know why he wants more haha. One big bike and one trail bike and one very old scooter. I said he should sell them all and buy a car! The problem in Phuket is police checkpoints are everywhere - I went through 3 already today.

Oh i remember those checkpoints. I thought it was funny that a lot of people would keep their helmet in the basket on the front of their motorbikes and not wear them, they would just put them on when they could see the checkpoint then as soon as they were through it they would take it straight back off.

It doesn't matter were you go in Thailand it's always fun and adventurous I do like that VW Bug myself the color is awesome 👍

I love traveling in Thailand because there's always so many cute and fun things to see. Country people and country food are the best too! I love the BUG too!

You are not wrong @seancallow always something new to see Amazing Thailand 😁

Hi @seancallow, the photography is absolutely stunning, it feels like I am on holiday, the top roof restaurant is amazing, might be favourite place for many tourists.

By the way, I saw your blog on Steemit too, I was wondering if that is your blog? I am asking because recently we noticed that there are cases when the acocunts of some users are copied and used by Identity theives, therefore, wanted to double check:

Thanks in advance, @stef1

Oh thanks for your kind compliments. I too love the roof top restaurants in Bangkok. About my steemit profile yes that is mine. I post on both platforms.
