RE: Range Is Live

It's less odd when you consider that media's raison d'être is to sell advertising. They've got to make sure you've got the fear so the ratings stay up and they can charge advertisers more. Things like public safety are at best secondary and as often as not, none of their concern. I think in this particular case the police were just excited to have something that doesn't make them look bad, and that's probably true to one degree or another more generally. Or at least that's the only reason I could think of that makes the slightest bit of sense.

Thing is, they don't always do that. We had two mass shootings that week, the first one killed a friend of the governor and the press and the police was all over it, even released bodycam footage within 48 hours. The second was in the predominately black part of town and it barely got a blip in the press and the police still haven't identified the shooter(s) or released bodycam footage.

They're having the bank shooter tested for CTE, which would explain at least some of the dissonance there. Some of the local media did some digging in their archives and found footage of him from when he was the star of a local high school basketball team, playing with a helmet on due to past concussions. I don't think it'll ever make sense but that's about the closest we're going to get I'm afraid.
