With the company of birds

Old Jewish Cemetery bw 9.jpg

I have been planning to visit this place for a long time.
A very long time. like a few years long.
And every time something was on the way and I kept postponing it.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally got my ass in a bus, and it dropped me off almost right in front of it.

Old Jewish Cemetery in Wrocław

Old Jewish Cemetery bw 10.jpg

The day started well and was sunny, but some dark clouds were approaching, and in the middle of a very enjoyable walk, it started to rain a bit. Not that it stopped me. I was more worried about the camera getting a bit too wet.

The current shape of the cemetery evolved mostly throughout the 19th century, during the times of the German Empire. The first burial took place in what was then the village of Gabitz (Gajowice), just outside city limits. The cemetery area was then expanded twice. In 1943, the burial ceremonies were abandoned and the necropolis was leased for five years to a gardening center. During World War II, the cemetery became a fierce battleground, the marks of which are still visible on many tombstones. It was inscribed into the register of city monuments in 1975.

The place is amazing! I did imagine it a little bit different and tried not to look at too many photos online.
It is a maze of narrow paths with very old trees, bushes, and overgrown ivy covering the place. And even though it is situated right next to a very busy street with buses and trams, the noise is completely muted. You can only hear the birds and wind. Lots of birds!

Absolutely amazing!

Due to the not-the-best weather, there was almost nobody there. During the 2 hours I was there, I saw maybe 3 people slowly wandering around.

I have also been putting off visiting the cemetery in my city for some time, the structures of the niches and mausoleums are not as beautiful as the ones you show us on this occasion, dear friend @ewkaw, it is beautiful and quiet, I don't think there is such a quiet place. like cemeteries
Beautiful shots, I love the monochrome images
Have a great day

There are usually other, more important things to do.
But it is nice to have a walk and relax in silence sometimes.
Thank you!

Beautiful place to visit. I need to try b&w at our local cemetery as well. Looks much better!

It usually works greats!

Very surprising by the vegetation that has taken hold and the size of the tombs. Black and white gives even more emotion to the photo on the site

All the trees and bushes were beautiful there.
Thank you :)

Dramatic and eloquent photos friend!... Applause and thanks for sharing!

There is something attractive and tempting in such photos. Cool! It is especially cool to visit cemeteries very early in the morning in the fall, so that it is cool and there is fog. A cemetery in the fog is something!

Oh that would have been so nice... to catch the fog. Wow!

that place look so much different from the typical cemetery here in my place. very interesting.

lovely shots also from you my friend.

It is much different from our current ones too. They are not as nice :)

WHHHHOOOOOOOAAAAAA that place is beautiful and your photos are awesome. I wonder if I have any distant relatives buried there......

During the 2 hours I was there, I saw maybe 3 people slowly wandering around.

Ghosts, probably.

Oh! your relatives lived in Poland?

In colorful clothes... definitely :D

I have some Eastern European Jewish ancestors that were nomadic. I believe some ended their wanderings in Lithuania and some in Spain, but they weren't always there. I think Poland was on the list at one point. Have to double check with my family history buff cousin.

Ghosts are much more fashion-conscious these days.

It is not impossible. There used to be a very large Jewish community in Poland.

😂

Used to be!!!!🤣

Ahhhhhh, inappropriate humor.

This places are always really interesting.

This one was my favorite shot

Thanks for share and have a great day.

Thank you! It was full of those ornaments and carvings. Very beautiful.

Beautiful old cemeteries for me always look like a kind of museum, stone tombstones are a whole art. In my area, during my childhood, monuments were made of metal rods. It was like pyramids. Some made crosses out of rebar.
With the collapse of the USSR, a culture of remembering people after death appeared in Russia and people began to put beautiful tombstones in memory of their relatives and friends. I often walk through our village cemetery and see big changes. Tombstones made of marble chips or solid marble with a photo on this marble... Sometimes it feels like I got to an exhibition of portraits of familiar people.

Catholic cemeteries, Jewish cemeteries, crypts - this is a separate architectural theme, causes only admiration.

That is interesting! Do you have any images of the ones made of metal rods?

The very old cemeteries are usually a lot nicer than the new ones. Even if they are a bit neglected.

Perfect shots to be done in mono!

Thanks a lot :)

The architecture combined with the flora of the place and the monochrome make this place a space that combines sadness and melancholy with beauty and peace. Amazin shots !
