My entry for the #monomad challenge.
This was a historic building in the downtown area of the city I live in. It has quite a bit of history; it was originally a barbershop, then converted into a tavern. During the Prohibition days, it was a bootleg bar, with a basement extending below the sidewalk and street.
Last winter, a homeless camp of individuals started a bonfire in the alley above to stay warm. Unfortunately, the fire spread as it was unattended, and the historic building lit up in flames.
Today, the building is condemned. I had a lot of good nights in this place when it was a tavern. Friends, cocktails, a juke box...those days will never happen again.
The history of this place is that the original barber of this building slit his throat in the entryway of this historic spot. He had tracked his wife down to a vehicle and found her in the middle of two male horse jockeys. He then attacked the trio and fled; he drove back to his shop, called his mother to say that he was sorry, and committed suicide. His ghost now is said to roam this place at night.
It's a tragic situation; there is a good chance this place will be razed before the winter. What that means to the ghost of the barber, and his place of legend will yet to be seen. I'm just upset I won't be able to drink a stiff brandy old fashioned, listen to Buddy Holly on the jukebox, and converse with friends in a place of history. Such is life, however...

Amazing how similar to building in England this is. You can see they initially built them like back in the home country back in the day. Great shots
Thanks! It's an old building, for sure - this whole area of town was built in the late 19th century, with most buildings still standing. I should dig into the history of the building for another post - it's pretty cool inside. There were all these old alarms, wires, buzzers buried in the walls everywhere during Prohibition to give people a head's up on police. Beneath the sidewalks were all these caves/basements, and I guess people used to use them to scoot from drinking place to drinking place to get their booze. It was like one large underground drinking circuit. So much history potentially gone...sad!

Ha no kidding; the bar is actually owned by a friend of mine, and I don't know if he went cheap with insurance or what, but nothing is moving. Sadly, if it does not get torn down, a college bar next to it will expand into it for nothing but a dance floor area...all that history will be lost, at some point.
