Lighthouse Beach in Evanston Illinois has some incredible ice formations right now along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
My daughter-in-law braved the bitter cold temperatures to go down to the beach with her camera and was able to get a few amazing photos to share with us while I sat home in my toasty warm house. All credit for these photos goes to her!
These arched formations were caused by wave action and wind on the Lake and below freezing temperatures. I've seen some astonishing ice along the shore, but never anything quite like these arches.

Chicago Police Marine Unit’s 45-foot patrol boats, M-1 and M-2, are on patrol this winter. They have powerful engines that give them fast response times, new transmissions and ice collars to protect their hulls for winter use.
Lake ice is not safe to venture out on. There are many cracks, thin spots and holes that are sometimes hidden by drifted snow and water temperatures are deadly if you fell in. You can experience cold shock one minute after being in the water.
Stay off the ice! Not only is it dangerous for you, but also for the first responders who would be called to go in the water for rescue or recovery.

I tend to venture on the ice but only if it's really safe. We currently have only 5 inches of ice. Enough to support a group of people. For me I wait until it reaches double digits in inches. Water on you when it's cold not a good combination.
Calm water lakes can get really thick ice and be pretty safe but I think driving on the ice anytime is scary!
Indeed can be scary. When I lived further North the ice would get 2 foot thick. There were times i ice fished out of custom designed camper trailer with sleeping accommodations. Yes rough water lakes and rivers I don't mess with.
I've only ice fished a time or two... Fun because we got into a school of the biggest crappie I have ever caught, but my strong aversion to the cold keeps me enjoying winter through the window!

Very nice photos of the edges of the lake with the snow.
I thought that in these cold dates, there were no more birds in the area, I imagined that they were all going to spend the winter in warmer places, but I see that there are still some left.
Thanks! We have many birds that stay here year round. There is a continuous queue of woodpeckers, blujays, cardinals, nuthatches, finches etc at my feeders.

I would love to see ice and snow, those are some amazing looking formations!
Unfortunately though, Australia has a select couple spots that can possible get some snow only and as for ice.. well when it's super cold and the car window is frosted up, it's as close as I will get 😅
We do have 4 distinct seasons here! It's ever changing. Keeps things interesting.
