Calm water lakes can get really thick ice and be pretty safe but I think driving on the ice anytime is scary!

Indeed can be scary. When I lived further North the ice would get 2 foot thick. There were times i ice fished out of custom designed camper trailer with sleeping accommodations. Yes rough water lakes and rivers I don't mess with.
I've only ice fished a time or two... Fun because we got into a school of the biggest crappie I have ever caught, but my strong aversion to the cold keeps me enjoying winter through the window!
