Giveaways and Ghosts
My early days on Hive were marked by a thought that was as easy as it was crucial to start my growth on the platform: how can I earn some tokens?
Indeed, tokens are at the heart of many projects on Hive and are a key tool to interact with them and begin to build your own portfolio.
As a Hive “newbee,” I was attracted by the frequent giveaways held daily on the platform: although these usually give out small prizes, for a newcomer they nonetheless appear as many little (but useful) opportunities to be seized!
This is how I first met @jfuji, a Canadian author who used — and uses — the tool of giveaways to publicize his stories and reward his readers with prizes and contests.
And I can confirm that the idea is a good one, since, after participating in some of these giveaways — which were more generous than those usually found on Hive — I began reading the stories on his profile, first starting with the one he was publishing at the time — The Childseeker's War, a fantasy novel — and later, a paranormal genre novel, which is still currently being published, entitled Hunting Midnight.
The story — you can find the first part here — is published in episodes of varying length, generally readable in about 10 minutes: serial publication keeps the reader's interest high, bringing him/her to always look for the next chapter to uncover new adventures for the characters.
At the center of the story we find a young girl, Alena Bisk, who has recently moved to a new city to start a small business together with a friend, the quirky and geeky-minded Deluxe Prime.
However, the girls' dreams are, before they can even start, interrupted by a series of strange events that begin to occur around the town: from an explosion with no apparent cause to the appearance of a boy named Willy who unsettles Alena, leaving her with strange feelings and the idea that something is not as it should be.
Without spoiling too much of the first episode — the only one currently released in its entirety — the girl's fears will soon prove to be well-founded: a paranormal presence will appear closely linked to the figure of Willy and it will be up to Alena, with the help of the trusty and resourceful Deluxe, as well as two young men she has just met, Dack and Fergus, to try to cope with a threat that seems to come from another reality. It is clearly capable of affecting our own reality, and endangering the lives of the unsuspecting citizens and the brave protagonists who try to stop it.
The reading flows smooth and fast, making us want to uncover more about this mystery and the elements that revolve around it: buildings that seem trapped in a space-time loop, astral realities in which the laws of physics seem to fail, a clock that stands high on the horizon marking the inexorable passage of time toward a mysterious threat... in short, all the elements for a mystery novel are there, and the reader soon finds theirself thrown into a engaging and fast-paced story in which the ending of a chapter often leaves us with the desire to find out as soon as possible how the story will continue.
In this regard, crucial is @jfuji's ability to always manage to keep the reader's interest high, making each part useful for the story development — never giving the impression of being there just to serve as a link between one event and another.
The relationship between descriptive parts, dialogues, and action scenes is also excellent, as they are well balanced with each other, allowing the reader to first immerse in the setting and then follow the unfolding of events with ease.
This is definitely made possible by the talent of @jfuji, who manages to make the dialogues between the characters very convincing and natural: the personality of each of them emerges from both their words and the behaviors described, giving them more credibility.
A note worth mentioning is about the vocabulary used: if you have a school-level knowledge of the English language — or at least an Italian school-level one! — be prepared to use a translator frequently, as there are many unusual words that you will come across and often your knowledge of the language will be put to the test, not only in the dialogues, but also in the descriptions of places, characters and feelings. The good news is that you will surely come out of the reading enriched with many new words that you did not even imagine existed!
Another noteworthy aspect is the story's originality: I am not an avid reader of the genre — the fantasy setting of The Childseeker's War was definitely more my taste — but @jfuji's novel is full of original and unique ideas, which keep surprising me and contribute to give a strong identity to the story, making it different from any other well-known stories and building page after page — or, perhaps, I should say post after post — a vivid, unique, and believable world.
In conclusion, I would sincerely recommend Hunting Midnight to anyone who enjoys reading engaging stories that change with each page turned, taking the reader into a thick mystery from which only time will tell whether, together with Alena, Deluxe, Duck and Fergus — as well as the other characters who will join the story — we will be able to come out intact and still with our mental health! 👻

Come, penso, per la maggior parte di noi, i miei primi giorni da Hivers sono stati caratterizzati da un pensiero tanto banale quanto essenziale per dare il via al mio processo di crescita sulla piattaforma: come posso cominciare ad ottenere qualche token?
I tokens rappresentano, infatti, il cuore di molti progetti su Hive e sono uno strumento fondamentale per interagire con essi e cominciare a costruire il proprio portafoglio di asset.
Da newbee di Hive sono, perciò, inizialmente stato attratto dai numerosi giveaways che quotidianamente si tengono sulla piattaforma: sebbene questi solitamente elargiscano premi molto contenuti, per un utente appena arrivato appaiono ciò nonostante come tante piccole opportunità da cogliere!
E' così che ho conosciuto, per la prima volta, @jfuji, autore canadese che utilizzava - ed utilizza - lo strumento dei giveaway per pubblicizzare i suoi racconti e premiare i lettori con piccoli premi ed eventi.
Da parte mia, non posso che confermare come l'idea sia valida, dato che, dopo aver partecipato ad alcuni di questi giveaway - fra l'altro più generosi di quelli che di solito si possono trovare su Hive - ho cominciato a dare un'occhiata ai brani presenti sul suo profilo, iniziando dapprima a leggere il lavoro che stava pubblicando all'epoca - The Childseeker's War, una storia ad ambientazione fantasy - e, successivamente, un romanzo di genere paranormale attualmente in corso di pubblicazione, intitolato Hunting Midnight.
La storia, di cui potete trovare qui il primo brano, viene pubblicata "a puntate" della lunghezza variabile, ma generalmente leggibili in circa 10 minuti: la pubblicazione seriale consente di mantenere l'interesse del lettore alto, portandolo a desiderare di leggere, di volta in volta, il capitolo successivo, così da scoprire le nuove vicissitudini dei protagonisti.
Al centro della storia troviamo una giovane ragazza, Alena Bisk, da poco trasferitasi in una nuova città per tentare di avviare un piccolo business insieme ad una amica, la stravagante e dall'animo geek Deluxe Prime.
I sogni delle due ragazze vengono però, ancora prima di poter incominciare, interrotti da una serie di strani eventi che iniziano a verificarsi a giro per la città: da una esplosione senza cause apparenti alla comparsa di un ragazzo di nome Willy che, da subito, inquieta Alena, lasciandole addosso strane sensazione e l'idea che qualcosa non quadri.
Senza voler spoilerare troppo del prosieguo del primo episodio - l'unico attualmente pubblicato nella sua interezza - i timori della ragazza si riveleranno ben presto fondati: una presenza paranormale apparirà strettamente collegata alla figura Willy e toccherà ad Alena, con l'aiuto della fidata e piena di risorse Deluxe, nonchè di due giovani da poco incontrati, Dack e Fergus, tentare di fronteggiare una minaccia che sembra provenire da un'altra realtà, più evanescente sì, ma chiaramente capace di influire sulla nostra e di mettere in pericolo le vite degli ignari cittadini e dei coraggiosi protagonisti che, loro malgrado, si troveranno nella necessità, anche morale, di cercare di farvi fronte.
La lettura scorre, quindi, veloce e ci porta a voler capire di più di questo mistero e degli elementi che vi ruotano attorno: edifici che appaiono come bloccati in un loop spazio-temporale, realtà astrali in cui le leggi della fisica sembrano venire meno, orologi che si ergono all'orizzonte scandendo l'inesorabile scorrere del tempo verso una minaccia misteriosa... insomma, gli elementi per una storia del mistero ci sono tutti ed il lettore si trova ben presto catapultato in un racconto avvincente e dal ritmo piuttosto serrato, in cui il terminare di un brano ci lascia spesso con il desiderio di scoprire quanto prima come proseguirà la storia.
A questo proposito, sicuramente un plauso va all'abilità di @jfuji di riuscire a mantenere sempre alto l'interesse del lettore, rendendo ogni brano della storia utile all'evoluzione della stessa - non dando mai, quindi, l'impressione di essere stato messo lì solo per fare da tramite tra un evento e l'altro.
Ottimo anche il rapporto tra parti descrittive, dialoghi e scene di azione, che risultano tra loro ben bilanciate, dando al lettore modo di calarsi dapprima nell'ambientazione e seguire poi con facilità lo svolgimento degli eventi.
In questo aiuto sicuramente il talento di @jfuji, che riesce a rendere in maniera molto convincente e naturale i dialoghi tra i personaggi: il carattere di ciascuno di essi emerge sia dalle parole che dai comportamenti descritti, contribuendo a conferire loro maggior credibilità.
L'unica nota sul punto che mi sento di dover segnalare riguarda il lessico usato: se avete una conoscenza scolastica dell'inglese preparatevi a fare largo uso di un traduttore, in quanto tanti sono i vocaboli inusuali che vi troverete davanti e spesso la vostra conoscenza della lingua sarà messa a dura prova, soprattutto nei dialoghi, ma anche nelle descrizioni dei luoghi, dei personaggi e degli stati d'animo. La buona notizia è che uscirete dalla lettura sicuramente arricchiti di tante nuove parole di cui nemmeno immaginavate l'esistenza!
Altro aspetto assolutamente positivo è l'originalità della storia: ammetto di non essere un lettore accanito del genere - il fantasy di The Childseeker's War era decisamente più nelle mie corde - ma il racconto di @jfuji è ricco di idee originali e particolari, che continuano a sorprendermi e contribuiscono a fornire un'identità tutta sua al romanzo, che non sembra il clone di qualche altra storia più blasonata, ma costruisce pagina dopo pagina - o forse dovrei dire post dopo post - un mondo vivo, unico e credibile.
Per concludere, mi sento di consigliare sinceramente la lettura di Hunting Midnight a chiunque ami la lettura e le storie intriganti, che si evolvono e mutano ad ogni pagina voltata, portando il lettore in mezzo ad un fitto mistero da cui solo il tempo saprà dirci se, insieme ad Alena, Deluxe, Duck e Fergus - nonchè agli altri personaggi che si aggiungeranno alla storia - sapremo uscire tutti interi e ancora provvisti della nostra sanità mentale! 👻
