As someone who grew up in Cambridge, UK, I am quite used to the idea of punting boats along the river, and seeing historical monuments along the way. Of course, in Venice, they use Gondolas, but the idea is much the same. A Gondolier would use a single oar to navigate the narrow canals and will offer some sightseeing narratives as they do so.
Since Gondola rides are the signature attraction in Venice - and why wouldn't they be, the city is built on water - a lot of tourists miss out on exploring much of the pedestrianised areas as well as some of the more famous landmarks like the Piazza San Marco or St Mark's Basilica.
To be honest, I was sparsely prepared when I visited, so these landmarks were not something I sought out. They just looked like they might be something of note and I took some pictures of them / with them. My next visit will involve a lot more pre-planning, as well as research on all the various places and what they are.
One thing which always sticks out to me when I think of Venice, is the infamous Shakespeare play "The Merchant of Venice" and the widely used phrase "A pound of flesh."
I can think of a few times in my life where "a pound of flesh" has been demanded of me but none better than during my days as a frivolous student, racking up exorbitant student loan debt and at the same time, getting loans and overdrafts from banks. It feels great.. until you have to pay it back, and it wouldn't be for another 5 years of slogging away at my first job after college that I would pay those debts back. Considering the salary that I was on, it felt like I was giving up a pound of flesh in repayments every month!

I stayed in Europe for over 6 years but never travel to the South of EU. Wish, I did. I was au pairing back then and almost spent my au pair allowances to visit almost every tourist attractions in my host country and partying. Wish, I learned to save more back then. But, No regrets here! All the travels and awesome memories were irreplaceable. Which until now, I'm forever grateful 😻✨
Wish, I could visit Italy one day ✨
GREAT PICTURES and you look stunning ✨✨✨
Aww, at least you didn't spend it all on partying, which was pretty much what I did with my debt leveraged lifestyle in college.. in retrospect, I should have probably started travelling and accumulating more experiences back then, and I might be a more mature person today. Like you mentioned, the memories and experiences while intangible, are priceless.
I'm sure you'll get the opportunity to travel to Italy one day, you'll appreciate it so much when you finally do! And thank you for the compliments!
It's not too late. The world is waiting to be discovered. one step at a time! ✨🐝🌸
I will manifest it. Hoping the travel restrictions will be on loose soon.
Stay safe!
Yesss, can't wait for the travel restrictions to end, perhaps we can all do a little mini festival meetup somewhere mutually accessible!
Yaaaayyy! That would be great.
I've been lucky enough to visit Venice a couple of times, its a beautiful place but at night, in Winter it's incredibly melancholic and rather eerie amongst all those back streets and alleys.
You need to post more my friend!
Have a great weekend :-)
Ah nathen, thanks for dropping by. I like your recommendation actually, I wouldn't have thought of it my first time but next time, definitely. In some of my travels to other European countries, the night time strolls through cobbled back alleys are among my favourite experiences. Actually they remind me a lot of Cambridge and it's own dark alleyways around the Colleges.
....except they're not full of students shagging and puking everywhere lol ;-).....hmmm or was that just in Leeds?!!
Oh, Cambridge students are far too "civil" for that.. most of the time .. lol
This is such a cool place. I am hoping to visit there one day. One of my favorite places in Vegas is the Venetian. It has water all through the hotel and offers gondola rides as well, but Venice would be so much more fun.
It is right? I've been to the Venetian in Macau and tried the mini Venice gondola rides in there.. suffice to say, after experiencing the real thing, it felt like a "cheap" knockoff by comparison.
Ya, I am sure the real gondola rides are so much better. We did a gondola ride in Vegas and it was so stupid having all the people walking around the hotel right next to the water when it was supposed to be more of an intimate and romantic time. I think a gondola ride in Venice during sunset would be amazing.
The photos are really great, the guy in the red pants and white shirt is so handsome!
Thank you!
Really you think so? I think he's okay.. the scenery is better 😅
Can I say I saw this man at first sight? 😁😁😁
😊
又一个花痴报道~🤣
I took some student loan to travel before I graduated from college. I was giving up a pound of fresh in repayments every months, like a year. You really reminded me on that. By the way, our Liketu chief is a very handsome guy.
Thank you! Yes, I also took out some loans to travel during college too, but I think I regret less about spending the money on experiences, and more on spending it on things which in hindsight seem pretty pointless .. parties.. drinking.. You know how it is..
It's a place in my dreams that I want to go to. And Wooww you looking good in red pants😍 so sexy!!!
It's really beautiful, and I wish I stayed a little bit longer. The vibes (whilst a bit touristy) are very romantic, so would be ideal with a romantic partner.
And thanks about the comment about the pants, I'm flattered! 😘
You stand out among the tourists.
Might be the brightly coloured shorts 😂
Great pics! I dropped a heart eyes NFT react for the handsome dude in the red shorts. Idk if he's single but... <3
<3 👨❤️💋👨
I'd voted this higher if there was mountain climbing involved.
Ahahaha I know where you're going with that.. No mountains far and wide damnit!
It's hard to believe a city like Venice even exists. I'll have to confirm it for myself one day. :)
Yes, I would have to agree. I also find it hard to believe that in addition to existing at all, that it continues to exist today with over a thousand years of history! It is a place to be marvelled, you're going to love it!

When we travel, we will always get new experiences with so many portraits of life.
It's a very beautiful sight.
Thank you for sharing a very interesting picture.. 😊😊
Indeed, experiences for me (despite the resurgence of the sentiment : "buy things not experiences" ) are still more important than materialistic things. I just wish I had the maturity to do some research before visiting, to appreciate what I was seeing a bit more.
I would like to have a boat ride and see the atmosphere.
Someday I might have a chance to go on a trip.
Oh, how could I forget the floating market boat rides in Thailand, equally captivating and unforgettable in their own way.
I hope you get to try the Gondolas in Venice one day though. You and prapanth would absolutely love it. It's effortlessly romantic!
My husband can row boats but has never been to a floating market.
I haven't login to LikeTu.
Why? I don't know.
Please, can you help me?

Every place has a story and memories. I'm so glad I saw your post today.
Aw, thanks chanmaly, I don't post too often, so it's really nice to hang with you in this corner for a change 😊
😊😊😊😊me too...
The place looks clean and tidy, very tidy.
Good observation, I remember thinking the same thing, especially given how many tourists visit each day!
It is considered lucky for the people there.
The scenery is really beautiful, but your handsome is more attractive to me
🙏 Thank you ying, i'm glad you appreciate both 😘
oh man,i don't think i want to ever experience anything like student loans.
pizza looks very good though! :P
Yeah, in this day and age, it is like 5x more than what I had in debt. I wouldn't recommend taking a student loan for my future children. I also probably wouldn't push them to go to University either.
Pizza in Italy hits different.. you know the vibes
It doesn't matter what "one pound of meat" you put out, otherwise "thousands of pounds of meat" will go into your wallet. I really like people who think like you, trying to rise up on their own in life for a better future. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thanks sir - we strive, we learn, we win some, we lose some. Onwards and upwards!
it's all a struggle, some things in life are not as easy as turning the palm of the hand.
I saw some beautiful places and I was really happy to see this place. The food looked very tasty. The second picture was awesome
Amazingly, there were gondolas in those tight canals too. I didn't catch it on camera, perhaps next time.
Nice... I want to visit here 😍
Do itttt
Green shorts > Red shorts!
Red velvet ones next time ;)
It looks incredible, it must be interesting to live so close to the water.
It might be inconvenient having to traverse so many bridges, or use the boats to get around..
Looking all fancy in there. Living the good life. That is the way to go. Super nice photos of Venice. Thanks for sharing.
Haha, some people don't like the red shorts apparently, but I dunno. They seemed like a good idea at the time. Thanks a lot!
I think they look great :D
Venice looks amazing mate!! Looks like you had fun, quote a bit different to the streets of Cambridge I can imagine lol! Awesome pics!!
Haha.. well Nathen (from above) seems to think Cambridge is full of students puking and shagging everywhere..
哇 这也太帅了吧~🤩
高龄粉丝团😅😏
I miss that crowd feeling pre-pandemic. Hoping one day I could visit Venice.
Yes I know how you feel, me too! I love th hustle and bustle in tourist season.
I missed your post, here I can see your life is very fun and you are very cool, you are very young, I really enjoy your trip @elmerlin 🍻🍻👌
wow, handsome and Domineering @liketu Founder
Am I really domineering?? 😅
My understanding is that you are a domineering president without losing your gentle demeanor
Thank you orz orz
新年快樂,祝你身體健康,財源廣進。非常感謝。
I can see from the picture that life there is very peaceful and the atmosphere is very good, and I like rowing the boat the most and some other sights that I've never seen here in my area, and you look cool wearing shorts let alone wearing glasses
Good to see that Venice looks the same I imagined seeing the photos and videos on the screen.
And you look great on that outfit.
Wow, the blogger is so handsome. Venice is worthy of being a water city. It's so beautiful.
very good atmosphere mr @elmerlin.. reading the story and the photos you shared, I was very impressed by the atmosphere there. I think I have to raise a lot of money to go there. I always wish you health and success 😉
Never have I got the chance to travel since the epidemic spread. Btw, the scenery is so gorgeous.
It's an amazing place for sure I would dream of coming here because of the pandemic period and I wish you well there and enjoy your day with a lot of time.
great place - btw, you killed the ootd shot
Thank you! #ootd needs more love !
I planed to go to France to have the master degree after graduating from university (I worked hard to learn French for two years). While, an sudden illness broke this plan…ahh, unfortunately the plan would never catch up with the changes.
Venice and the UK are places I have always wanted to go to. I hope the Covid-19 would pass soon and can travel around again.
My English is not very good... though I am an English major and passed many difficult exams. I lacked an application environment after graduation, so my English skills deteriorated a lot over time.
Thanks for the platform liketu, which gave me the opportunity to pick up my English ability.
Thank you❤️
Appreciated, thank you.
I learned French at school for something like five years. It was a mandatory second language. By the time I finished school, I felt some what confident in holding a conversation and could get by if I went to France. However, like you, I didn't have an environment to practice and I have since then forgotten just about everything.
The good thing about English is, you are almost forced to use it - not that we force people to use it at liketu - just it is how we are able to reach and engage with the broadest demographic on the internet.
I hope you enjoy using liketu.
Five years?!That sounds great(≧∇≦) My second foreign language is Japanese…somehow, I could use it travel in Japan by myself..still have no use in my daily life
That’s true. We’re “forced to use English”, if we don’t wanna to have limited outlook.
Nice to me you😆😆😆
@elmerlin

@elmerlin
Is there any issue to the Liketu web page? I cant make post (Reason) Server Error
Hello @elmerlin! I've been seeing some posts of people on Liketu with those Liketu watermark/logo as well as the username. Do you guys manually edit that or is there an option where it can put that logo automatically? Would like to have it on my photos as well. Thank you so much!
That used to be a mandatory thing we put on images for branding. We received some feedback that it was not desirable and ruining people's images.
We've decided to take it off all pictures for now, but we're implementing a new one where people can choose to put it on. I'll save this conversation and let you know when that's live so you can turn it on.
Ohhh I see. Got it! That would be great to have options. Thank you so much!
My cousin also grew up in UK, wish I can visit her someday and take pictures of the scenery there. Would be a really different and interesting scenario since I live in a tropical country. 😅 Sorry for the randomness of my comments haha
I've been thinking about going to Venice for a while now,It's a beautiful city and I just have a question how is it with the English language in them because when I was in cathania in Sicily hardly anyone could communicate with us and do you recommend any cool place that is worth visiting and is not in the tourist guides?
Be strong buddy! I know how stressful is to be in debt! Τhink that the hard and difficult situations are the ones that push us forward, that improve us!
What's up man. It's been about 6 months since we last touched base, figured I'd hop on a 6 month old piece.
Last we spoke, liketu wasn't available for use on iOS mobile. The interface seems to have changed since then, mobile good to go now?
Hang in there bud, we're almost out with something. It's gonna be great for iOS!
No sweat. I'll keep an eye out.
When I visited Venice, it was like a dream come true, as I like to work with vitrofusion, for me it was something beautiful, visiting the island of Murano. I will never forget
Very beautiful these pictures. I would like to know Venice. According to historians the name of my country originated there because they used the term "Venezziola" which is nothing more than a diminutive in Italian, which means "little Venice". Over the years the word evolved into what we know today as "Venezuela". Greetings!
Hello honey, I stopped by your blog to get to know you a little and thus thank you for so much help. Beautiful photos of that trip, a big hug 🤗🤗
Thanks for posting on liketu! 😊
🫂 bendiciones
@elmerlin Venice has always been the place I would like to visit, very nice pics. Btw I take this opportunity to congratulate u for the App liketu, when I can download it from App Store, it will become my favorite App❤️.
Thank you!
We're rolling out the mobile in stages. First will be a web based mobile UI. After that we'll be making the move to the app stores. But yes, eventually we'll be on the app stores.
@elmerlin That's great, I can't wait to use it as a mobile app 😍
