“ Everyone starts from somewhere”
This morning, I was so adamant about making bread just because I forgot to buy regular white bread at the grocery store. At the same time, my mom was also running out of yeast since she often makes doughnuts. So, I utilized what we had and ended up making a rustic bread without any yeast. But the thing is, it’s going to be my first time making rustic bread and no yeast. My desperation led me hoping that it would magically work. I started gathering all I needed, flour, salt, water, baking powder, and sugar. Though I was skeptical, it’s worth trying, at least I thought.
My mom was still resting until she got down to the kitchen and saw me kneading in a small bowl. She started asking me what the ingredients were and saying things like, “ How come you make bread with no yeast?” “ That's the recipe from when they first invented bread!”, “ this kind of thing is what my great grandmother would eat”. She started nagging and showing me more tools to work with. I ended up switching to bigger bowls and she taught me kneading techniques. She was extremely skeptical but just let me see it through.
“ Who is writing recipes like this? Are you sure you’re not reading a recipe book from centuries ago”
After mixing everything, I got the dough and it turned out quite decent without knowing what would happen. It got approval from my mom when it comes to the visual. After waiting for about 30 minutes, the bread was ready. I showed my mom and then when we tried to cut it through, it was hard as concrete. My mom laughed so hard and she said, “ this is the kind of bread they ate in the past”, “ you can throw this around and play with it like a ball” and then she laughed harder saying that if I ever get robbed, I can throw the bread to the robber and they’ll faint. There were so many variations of it but we just laughed it off.
Then my mom started telling me her failure stories when she was in high school. She used to try so many recipes and failed. And my grandfather would cheer her up and said, “ let’s just go buy it”. Through those failures, she learned many tips, tricks and recipes to bake better cookies. She told me that she would cry but because I laughed, she laughed too and was happy to find that it was my way to deal with failure; instead of crying, I chose another way to deal with it. My grandma came in and started saying the same thing. She said that it is okay to make mistakes when you make something for the first time but learn from your lesson. Because everyone starts from somewhere!

I can imagine that the bread that was baked in the old times can be used as a weapon like French bread.
True to that, we may first experience some failures on the baking side as proper recipe and measurement are needed to get the desired results. Good thing I only cook and not bake I think baking is something hard for me as I use feelings on my dishes.
@tpkidkai hahaha yeah, but baguette is hard outside and soft inside. Mine was hard in both hahaha. I can bake cookies and cakes but bread is something I am still learning because I want to introduce sourdough in the bakery that my mom runs.
We have in our place a bread the same as yours in texture that's called Baston best way to eat it is dipping it in hot coffee.
All the best with that Mac!
We make such jokes about hard bread too! I remember back in college, there was this small bakery in the neighborhood at the back of our school where we would hang out during our breaks.
One of my friends would often buy a bag of a certain type of fist-sized bread, which, by his own admission, were hard as a rock!
And he would often joke that if we ever got in trouble there while he's around eating his favorite bread, he would come to our aid by throwing the bread at the heads of whoever we were in a tussle with. 🤣
@kryptik.tigrrr3d hahahahahaa there are certain breads that are hard as rock but the inside is soft. I saw new yorkers had this "knock" test and it's real. I guess the bread they had was like that but it's funny joke regardless :D
I asked some of my friends in FB if they remembered it, and one said we called it "stone bread" back then. It was so hard you could kill someone with it. 🤣
I've made mistakes with baking bread too though mine wasn't as hard as rock,it was really soft and sticky. Lol. I wasn't happy because of my wasted flour but I shook the failure off and told myself I'll do better next time. It's not good when individuals dwell on their failures instead of moving on and learning lessons from it.
@teknon My mom said that if the dough is sticky, that means we need to knead it a lot. What she taught me was throwing the dough upside down lol and it worked soften the dough in a good way and making it stretch without being sticky. So, did you finally find the secret recipe to bread making?
I haven't really found any secret, I was meaning to ask you share yours if any, I really want to make a fine, soft and tasty bread.
😂
I think I need to get myself some of this bread for when the time comes for me to defend myself from robbers. I'd just stone them some pieces.
It's so nice that you handled it with love, it would make learning from your mistakes much easier to do later on. And granny is right: as long as you learn your lesson, it's okay to make mistakes the first time.
I love your mother's sense of humour, by the way.
@olujay my mom sense of humor is weird but we had many good laughs because my silliness. I am pretty stubborn and I like to see it through and that's often where the " I told you so" and laughs happen :D I have to produce many of these not as bread but as weapon hahaha
Lol I couldn't stop laughing at all your mother said...
Great grandmother's kind of bread? Recipe book from centuries ago? 😂 This is so hilarious.
And then, after realizing it was a total waste of time, your mum didn't fail in making a good fun out of it while trying to make you feel better for failing at a first new trial.
But the bread looks too good to be too strong for eating 😅 anyone would be deceived by it's looks lol
@merit.ahama hahahahaha like I mentioned, the looks is approved, it's not something to be eaten though :D
Haha sure, except I want to have my teeth broken 😂
The pictures look so good!
I must admit I was wondering how you made bread with no yeast, ah well we live and learn, and your mum now has something to tease you about for forever and a day!
@tengolotodo Right? but apparently there are people who made bread with no yeast. They just use milk or butter. But even so, that doesn't seem to be working. It's not expanding and the inside was tough as much as the outer part haha. My mom has a lot to tease me about and this is just one of them xD
And thank you for this post.... I spent half an hour yesterday reading all about no yeast bread and recipes🤣🤣🤣
Now I shall have to make some sometime!
Hehe well you would have led a boring life if your mum had nothing to tease you about🤣😎
I am thinking of baston bread that my parents used to buy when I was still a kid. Yes it was cheap but kind of hard that we need to dip it in our hot drink, lol.
Now I was curious, where is the bread? 😄
@lhes that's like baguette! my mom and I ended up eating the bread with jam that we have. It was not the best bread but I'll do better xD
From the picture it seems like everything is Ok😃 I think every of us have these kind of experiences that gives us great lessons))
@xuwi yes! the outer side is ok but when we tried to cut it, it was hard as rock hahahaha. That part got my mom laughing too.
