Fazenda do Secretário
This is one of the best examples of a 18th-19th century coffee farm located in the city of Vassouras, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A neoclassical architecture very characteristic for that time, this farm used to have more then 500,000 coffee trees. This region was a big coffee producer during the 19th century, when coffee world prices were super high. Production went down a lot at the end of the century with prices going down. Nowadays there is almost no coffee production in this region, but these pieces of history are preserved and some open for visitation.

If you didn't tell me it was a coffee farm, I would have thought it was just a house belonging to some very wealthy person, or even a noble. Sure looks like a cosy place to be!
At that time, the nobles, and very wealthy ones were the coffee producers. The first picture is the main house, and the owner used to host the customers that would travel from far, so there are lots of rooms. The second picture is a chapel, or church.
How come the coffee producers lost their edge? What industry did they move into instead?
A lot of things changed at the time, but the main reason was a huge drop in coffee prices in the world. Most were owned by aristocrats from Portugal.
