When I met Araya, a town located on an arid peninsula in eastern Venezuela, I saw it as a very inspiring place. Everywhere I looked: the beach, the castle, the salt flats, I felt there was poetry.
People come here to bathe in its idyllic beaches and climb for a while to what survives of the castle or the Real Fortaleza de Santiago de Arroyo de Araya, from where there are fabulous views.
This fortress built by the Spaniards between 1622 and 1630, protected the salt mines here from the Dutch, who wanted to appropriate them because of the high value of salt at that time because it was used to preserve food.
The Laguna Madre (Mother Lagoon) dominates much of the landscape behind the beach and its color, which sometimes turns pink, intensifies when the sun is at its peak. All this scenery transmits an incredible serenity that is also accompanied by the constant breeze that blows.
Now on second thought, poetry is found here even in the name of the municipality, which is called Cruz Salmerón Acosta (1892-1929), a poet born in these lands and who despite his short life left many verses for posterity, the best known is called "Azul" (Blue), I invite you to look it up on the web.
Cuando conocí Araya, un pueblo ubicado en una árida península del oriente de Venezuela, lo vi como un lugar muy inspirador. Hacia cualquier lado que posara mis ojos: la playa, el castillo, las salinas, sentía que había poesía.
La gente llega hasta acá para bañarse en su idílicas playas y subir un rato a lo que sobrevive del castillo o la Real Fortaleza de Santiago de Arroyo de Araya, desde donde se tienen unas vistas fabulosas.
Esta fortaleza construida por los españoles entre los años 1622 y 1630, protegía a las salinas que hay acá de los holandeses, quienes querían apropiarse de ellas dado el alto valor que tenía la sal en esa época porque servía para conservar los alimentos.
La Laguna Madre domina gran parte del paisaje que está detrás de la playa y su color que a veces se torna de tonalidades rosa, se intensifica cuando el sol está en su punto álgido. Todo este escenario transmite una increíble serenidad que además es acompañada por la constante brisa que sopla.
Ahora, pensándolo bien, la poesía se encuentra aquí hasta en el nombre del municipio, el cual se llama Cruz Salmerón Acosta (1892-1929), un poeta nacido en estas tierras y que a pesar de su corta vida dejó muchos versos para la posteridad, el más conocido se llama "Azul", los invito a que lo busquen en la web.
