“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change” (Wayne Dyer)
I was thinking about perspective and our ability to see when I have created this artwork. I combined pointillism and watercolor painting to get this abstract drawing done.
Daniel Smith watercolors , Indian ink and my 0.1 mm rotring isograph make an excellent team.
I thought about how looking at things can be quite exhausting and I used an eye to illustrate how tiresome is trying to always see reality through our eyes.
I have put legs on this eye and little tired creatures with their tongues out to show that it is never a good idea to try to walk through life with a narrow sighted mentality. It will exhaust you and many good opportunities will be missed because you felt too little with your heart and saw too much with your rational eyes.
The octopus is known for flexibility. I have connected this beautiful animal to the eye to show towards what all of us aspire to: freedom of thought and a good evaluation of reality. We believe what we see, no matter if it is right or wrong. Therefore changing our thinking errors and becoming more open minded is necessary if we want to aspire towards a fulfilling life.
If we always believe that we are right, then we learn nothing as we choose to close our eyes in front of the things we do not want to accept.
There is a great quote illustrating my idea:
"I have already made up my mind, don't confuse me with facts.” ― Philip A. Fisher

Vision is more than what we see. Reality is about what we feel, what we think and what we decide to do about it. There is no such thing as a universal accepted reality. I have my own version of reality and so do you.
I believe that when we start to accept that our vision can be flawed and improved, it is only then when we can start to see.
Although so many people have their eyesight and mind intact, it can be quite interesting to notice how much of their lives was spent without seeing anything at all….
Some phone pictures taken during the painting process
Have a great day and toodle loo!
Many people only use their eyes to see what is in front of them, but, having such a small area can make it even more challenging, especially given the fact that there is so much detail involved here. So, now your eyes and relying on the extreme stillness of hand. It is really fascinating to see the transformation done.
When I read the entire post, it allows me to wander into different territory, mixing your words with the watercolors, blending the two. Beautiful work!
Hey Denise! Thank you so much for such a lovely comment, your words are so nice! My hand has to be quite still indeed, it is demanding and yet it relaxes me completely. I am in a state of flow when I do my art. Watercolors and words, yes, I belive in explaining my art and the meaning behind it. I think it helps people get the idea and somehow understand me and my art better. Thank you for stopping by!
You are totally correct. Art is subjective and many people do not understand it, so I am glad you take the time to explain it.
You're welcome Denise, I enjoy explaining my art
I really enjoy how you are embracing colors in your works together with pointillism. They look so amazing! The octopus reminded me of one old alien movie, I think it was these Martians coming to earth to destroy us. But your octopus is way cooler! Been tipping my toes in this combo (watercolors + pointillism and inks + pointillism) for a while myself. It is always such a pleasure to see how tiny dots transform the piece and enhance details. Keep them coming! Hugs
Hello girl! Thank you very much for your lovely words, they always bring a smile to my face knowing they come from a sincere place, your heart. I love the octopus, it is such a fascinating creature, the way an octopus moves in the sea is so elegant, so sublime and so calm. I guess that the big head of the octopus reminded you of the aliens haha.
I am stoked to try new techniques as combining my old ones into something new. I guess that for us artists it is easy to remain in our comfort zone but in the same time I believe that once in a while we can have our phases, when we experiment. Now I am going through pointillism meets watercolor and ink phase lol. I am trying to find what works for me and makes me feel happy rather than doing what I think would be pretty impressive. Pointillism alone is impressive, but somehow I believe it is too easy and I need to do something extra. My brain just likes a challenge, if I sit too much with one thing I get easily bored and I feel in a rut. Do you feel like this too sometimes?
I made a purchase of some cool stuff I want to try, I will make a future post about it. In the last months I feel I am releasing my inner child more and that I do more stuff for myself than I ever did before. I guess these are the perks of being happily single and not having to waste my love and energy on somebody who does not deserve it. So I focus it on me. And Gosh it feels amazing to just create and love yourself and let your inner child just play around with colors. I believe you are doing the same as you love to experiment as well. I am sure that you will create beautiful exquisite pieces because you are very talented as well .
Big hugs from a big kid to a big kid hihi
This is very nice, and on such a small surface.
There was a movement of doing very small canvases, but I can't recall the name of it now. I believe it was Renaissance'ish era, but this kind of reminded me of that too.
I wasn't familiar with Pointillism, but I looked it up and now I have learned something new.
Are you familiar with the Australian painter Brett Whiteley? He's probably my favorite artist, but he passed away. I try to share him with other people who appreciate painting because he was famous, but not often mentioned.
Hello!Thank you very much, it is indeed quite difficult to do this technique on a small surface. It is challenging for the eyes and it makes me perfect my focus and patience.
I have not heard of this painter but I will definetely look him up. Unfortunately too many artists do not reach fame until they pass away. Hopefully it will not be my case lol. I believe in showing appreciation for the artist while he/she is alive. It is when it matters the most

Thank you a lot! It is lovely to combine multiple techniques, I love trying out new stuff
Beautiful art. You are a talented artist
Thank you so much!
Oh, wow! So many details and information into a single artwork! I love that! Well done Mary!
Hey Gabriela! Thank you very much! I am happy when I see people appreciating the amount of detail in my artworks. I do put a lot of love and patience in my art and you can definetely see that! Hugs!
Beautiful art and such beautiful words full of wisdom, we lose out in so much when we believe that we see only with our eyes, and how much our thinking affects what we see xxxx
Hey! Thank you a lot for appreciating my art and most of all, the meaning behind of it. Yes, we lose when we only see , although it sounds pretty much like a paradox as everybody thinks that they really see everything all the time. I believe that feelings and following your intuition can help a lot in shaping your reality and making decisions. Have a lovely day!
It is wonderful Mary and yes I can imagine this kind of work is very tiring for your eyes.
Hi Sally! Thank you for your compliment! It can be tiring for the eyes so I take a break usually after 2 hours to just relax. It is good to do so as I need my eyes to be in an excellent health. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
I really like the watercolour and the exposition to go along with it. Sometimes we do see better by closing our eyes. Very, very nice.
Thank you very much! Closing our eyes makes us rely on our senses, our inner intuition. Often in life, following that gut feeling brought more good results than trying to find a mathematical solution to the problem.
