RE: People Are Going Back Into Survival Mode

in GEMS3 years ago

Europe overall is out of hand.
I live in Portugal and we saw the toilet paper madness.
However this grain/oil shortage is causing more harm than good. While the future is uncertain and we are all on the edge of our seats, supermarkets also have a big villain role.
Just the other day I went to pick some sugar and there was this advert saying that each buyer could only take 10 packs (of 1kg), however the brand right next to it had no limit whatsoever.
Just as I was leaving I saw this really old man carrying his cart full of sunflower oil, about 20 bottles.
Has that man even thought about his actual need? I don't think he'll consume it all, specially because it's harmful for cholesterol. And putting in perspective I don't remember the last time I purchased the one I have on my cabinet.
Not to talk about the 30% inflation we have been suffering.

As someone who worked on a supermarket, that is just vile and leads the population to irrational panic.

Hopefully things will get better

Sort:

wow, didn't know that it was this bad in Portugal as well! I think it's just survival mentality. Buy now because your neighbor might buy first!...

This mentality issue is actually even more harmful than the material aspect I think. We have to get back to a more harmonious state

Yeah! It has been ridiculous over here too.
I have a survival mentality as well, but I think in more pratical ways. If you are on the run are you really bringing those oil bottles with you or canned food?

I agree, but as long as media and enterprises have a way to create panic and fill their pockets they will, and no harmonious state will be achieved, unfortunately
