You have probably seen something like this in your local store
Empty shelves... until now "only" oil and wheat is affected by this stupid/terrible war. But It's a sight I never really thought I'd see in a wealthy nation within Europe.
Like really... who would have thought some years ago that there could be shortages in the most basic of food supplies? Well, of course we has a little something called "corona". Remember that? Well I still do; unfortunately my country hasn't yet come out of the panic mode (although most countries in Europe are now recognizing the virus to be endemic) and so we are still stuck with the whole protection measures (don't get me wrong, many of course are really helpful for combating the virus, but hardly anyone talks about the massive collateral damage which are also caused by them (especially to children))
So in a way we are actually now already used to sights like this due to the two last years of the pandemic. But the difference is that the toilet paper frenzy and supply shortage back then was rather superficial. Nobody really thought that there was a true shortage, but the panicked customers trying to hoard every last slip of paper. The difference now is that there is actually a shortage, or at least about to come up.
Ukraine and Russia as one of the countries with the biggest wheat and edible oil exports will now not supply the global/European markets. So there is a real dry up... This time it's harder to blame the people that go on panic shopping sprees. Perhaps this time I am the stupid one for not stocking up my supplies at home.
Just today I overheard a woman in a supermarket talk about her wish to eat/make a pancake again. Wow! Like this is really affecting people's lives now. Of course it's still very superficial and a first world problem to not being able to make pancakes on a sunday afternoon. But the fact is that for all of the stupid ones not having bought some wheat in advance it is currently not possible to do so... Again, I never thought that we'd be in such a situation in Europe.
What I and I suppose most people are really in short supply of, however, is a better global situation. What we need is an atmosphere/context in which we can thrive rather than survive. We have to go back to finding peace and common ground between humans. War is the worst outcome in human interaction and I guess we still haven't manages to live without it as a whole. We need trust and trade, freedom and prosperity. I hope we will find it again.

We will. Although it's been many millenia since we had freedom, now that the shackles are easier to see.
A too often familiar scene in supernarket. It's happening all over the world. If it's not here then it's somewhere else. Bread, fruit, vegetables all sold out. It used to be toiletries and disinfectant and of course face mask. But it has been quiet for a while. Perhaps it's the tension of the Russian war starting this all over again !
it's definitely due to the war, hope it doesn't get worse!
The war between the two countries have really affected so many things especially oil which is but appropriate at all and I just hope the war ends as soon as possible
yes, hope it ends soon! But there is just so much conflict in the world right now that we almost need a miracle to end it
Europe overall is out of hand.
I live in Portugal and we saw the toilet paper madness.
However this grain/oil shortage is causing more harm than good. While the future is uncertain and we are all on the edge of our seats, supermarkets also have a big villain role.
Just the other day I went to pick some sugar and there was this advert saying that each buyer could only take 10 packs (of 1kg), however the brand right next to it had no limit whatsoever.
Just as I was leaving I saw this really old man carrying his cart full of sunflower oil, about 20 bottles.
Has that man even thought about his actual need? I don't think he'll consume it all, specially because it's harmful for cholesterol. And putting in perspective I don't remember the last time I purchased the one I have on my cabinet.
Not to talk about the 30% inflation we have been suffering.
As someone who worked on a supermarket, that is just vile and leads the population to irrational panic.
Hopefully things will get better
wow, didn't know that it was this bad in Portugal as well! I think it's just survival mentality. Buy now because your neighbor might buy first!...
This mentality issue is actually even more harmful than the material aspect I think. We have to get back to a more harmonious state
Yeah! It has been ridiculous over here too.
I have a survival mentality as well, but I think in more pratical ways. If you are on the run are you really bringing those oil bottles with you or canned food?
I agree, but as long as media and enterprises have a way to create panic and fill their pockets they will, and no harmonious state will be achieved, unfortunately

We also have some empty shelves here in my part of Queensland which I am not too sure why, maybe delivery truck problem or the increase in population on the Sunshine Coast. We so need peace for the whole world @tobedatada so the all people can feel safe and quietly prosper. Or at least go to the supermarket to buy any food they need.
